The Julius Caesar Haircut Article

It was a Sunday too humid for comfort. The date was the 27th of November 2005. Our rehearsal had originally been scheduled to begin at 2pm, with the hope of maybe being let off for good behaviour around 6:30pm. However, late the night before, the cast of Julius Caesar received a mysterious sms, instructing us to arrive at rehearsal at 12:30pm instead. No reason given. An early start so we might be able to go home early? Possible.... but unlikely.

It was like a scene from a movie. All of the actors seemed to arrive at the same time. We got out of our cars and looked at each other in confusion....... why the early call? Who had made this heinous suggestion and how badly could he/she be beaten and still be able to perform come opening night? Somewhere..... somehow.... someone was going to get hurt. As we entered the rehearsal studio, a big, jovial-looking Indian man greeted us with a big smile. Next to him, was our director, Joe Hasham, with an even bigger smile. “Right!” Joe exclaimed “In the chair, one at a time!” The chair I thought...... what the hell for? Joe was only too happy to explain. “There were no sideburns in Ancient Rome! So you've all been called in early to have your hair chopped! Get in the chair! Now! Patrick, you first!”

Being the good sport that he is, Patrick naturally obliged. After all, it was free and Patrick has never been one to turn down anything free. But it was the more junior cast members that seemed particularly disturbed by this sudden requirement. But young Calvyn Wong declared “I'll do it! I'll suffer for my art... Joe, can we use gel in this production?” Colin Kirton and Amsalan Doraisingam decided to make fun of everyone, seeing as they're bald and have nothing left to chop. Ari Ratos, being the good natured all-round nice guy that he is, opted to remain silent..... although I did see him sticking pins into what looked like a voodoo doll of some sort during the smoke break. Michael Chen on the other hand, was quite ready to look on the positive side of things, saying that the shorter his hair was, the more rice his mother would gladly dish out at the dinner table. While Roshan Narayan and Pavanjeet Singh simply sat crying in a corner talking about how they longed for the days when 'Transformers' was still on the air.

As for me, I took it like a man..... and made an appointment with my stylist the very next day.

KLPAC October Show Listings

Pygmalion (Musical)
Presented by: Maxis One Club & KLPac

Director: Paul Loosley
Executive Producer: Faridah Merican
Artistic Director: Joe Hasham

Cast: Harith Iskander as Professor Higgins, Indi Nadarajah as Colonel Pickering and introducing Michelle Quah as Lisa, the flower girl. Also featuring Monti, Suzan Manen, Sarah Shahrum, Renee Aziz, Elaine Pedley, Llewellyn Marsh, Tabitha Kong, Janet Li, Kay-Li, Nicole Ann Thomas and Cristina Yap.

In case you didn't know, My Fair Lady the musical was based on the novel Pgymalion by George Bernard Shaw.

Synopsis:
An all-new musical production of the bitter-sweet George Bernard Shaw play in which a common flower seller is miraculously transformed to pass herself off as upper class.

A tale about language, class, manners and matters of the heart that is as true today as it was at the beginning of the last century. And given Malaysia’s unique penchant for the use and misuse of English; the opportunities for Manglish, malapropisms and hilarious turns of phrase are fantastic.

But more importantly it makes the wonderful and very true point that if a person is good at heart, it really doesn’t matter where they were born, what their background was and how they speak. In the final analysis of love & purity of spirit remains constant and everything else is superficial and without real value.

Paul Loosley, winner of the first Cameronian award for Stage Design, has in usual fashion, taken a somewhat quirky approach to directing the play. Being a great lover of the story as it relates to his own very working class English background he knew this was a play for today even though he’s remained fairly faithful to the original play, which Saw first wrote in 1916.

But in this interpretation the tale is kind of set in the present, and kind of set in Malaysia but aspects of the words and lyrics and culture and set and wardrobe remain kind of British and even kind of Edwardian. The idea being that this particular staging exists in its own unique, eclectic, kind of hybrid world. And so makes its own unique statement by being relevant to both the story, which is about human values not time and place, and to Malaysia, which also boasts a totally unique, eclectic and a hybrid culture.

As you will see, with a cast of 14 and an orchestra of 7, this will be the biggest production and the first all-original musical show so far staged at the new Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac).

But ultimately it is a performance that will really entertain and really touch people so that they can come away feeling they have spent a couple of really worthwhile hours. And with luck, they have searched and discovered, as Shaw says, some small hidden truth.

Reka Art Space (Oct-Nov)

“SCRIPTED BODIES“ A group exhibition of art-works exploring identity by 7 artists

Who are we? How do we speak, interact and behave differently with different people? How do these expectations and interactions shift with the spaces that we occupy? Where do these ideas come from? Who instructs us and why do we comply? Who owns our bodies?

These were some of the questions explored in SCRIPTED BODIES, a collaborative project between Reka Art Space and KRYSS (Knowledge and Rights with Young People through Safer Spaces) and supported by HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad and the United Nations Population Fund.

This exhibition concludes a workshop that encourages younger artists to explore the idea of body as text, especially in relation to notions of identity, gender and sexuality through their art. Angela Kuga Thas, Ezrena Marwan, Lim Paik Yin, Lor Yew Mien, Marvin Chan, Nazim Esa, Ong Ju Lin & Yati Kaprawi met over 6 weekends in September and October to discuss ideas and critique each other’s work resulting in each of the artists tackling the issues from different angles.

Reka Art Space has consistently been creating situations and spaces that encourage cross-disciplinary exchange, issue-based work and critical dialogue amongst art practitioners.

KRYSS on the other hand, aims to work with young people on issues that they deem to be urgent through creative expressions and a rights-based approach.

“We want to contribute towards building a cultural environment that is critical. On our part, we do this by creating structures and spaces that are safe for exploration and frank discussions”, says Reka Art Space gallery manager, Chang Yoong Chia.

“Workshops encourage communal participation, provide a forum for the exchange of opinions and ideas and helps expand the boundaries of what it means to be a practising artist. And often, the results are unexpected and surprising.”, he further explained.

Wong Perng Fey: Still Views

Wong Perng Fey’s (b. 1974, Kuala Lumpur) chosen subject is the Malaysian landscape. The process of his painting forms an emotional bridge between man and his surroundings, exploring questions of belonging, memory, inhabitation, change and permanence. At times exuberant and energetic, sometimes melancholy and calm, his works reflect a range of complex textures as varied as those found in the lived environment. He has exhibited several remarkably sensitive bodies of work, and continues to probe the language of painting to find new powerful interpretations of his subject.

This October, VWFA will showcase Wong Perng Fey’s fourth solo exhibition. Moving to a very different studio context has propelled this talented young artist to produce another powerful body of work. Despite being Wong Perng Fey’s continuous personal artistic journey, ‘Still Views’ offers viewers a chance to rekindle their relationship with the land and with paint.

Graduating from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1998 on scholarship, this young artist has so far begun to make his mark in the Malaysian context, exhibiting in numerous galleries and exhibitions. His works have been collected by Malaysia’s National Art Gallery and Galeri Petronas. Wong Perng Fey was also amongst the earliest recipients of the Rimbun Dahan residency program (2002).

Review:
We had the pleasure of being invited for this delicious showcase.
It was an amazing look as the history and diverstiy of the Malaysia Theatre and Musical scene. Brought back memories of play staged long time ago.
The performers had such a wide ranging repetoire to sign and pulled it off superbly. The mix of newcomers like Tony Eusoff, Alex Koh and Chee Sek Thim.. had us all amazed. The ladies did well with the comeback of Ida and Sukania.. Shanon Shah stood out as well with his perfect piano play.. All in all.. a well deserving Encore!.. Go watch it!

Chang Fee Ming : Swahili Coast

Chang Fee Ming returns this year with a series of work entitled ‘Swahili Coast’. This series is composed of over two dozen detailed sketches and small watercolours, and one new large painting. The works were inspired by his travels to East Africa late last year. “To travel and see and paint is for me a way of learning, part of my life philosophy” said Fee Ming during his Mekong exhibition in 2004. As such, just shortly after that major solo exhibitions were completed, the artist was setting off again to see the world and paint again. making difficult journeys through Yunnan, Tibet, Qinghai, Szechuan in his quest to seek the source of the Mekong river before moving on to Africa. The results are brimming with new colours and textures from a culture previously unexplored by the artist. Followers of this eminent Malaysian watercolourist will notice that wherever he goes, Fee Ming always returns with heartfelt and soulful portraits of the people, and pictures of places carrying a quiet charm not so unlike his Terengganu hometown.
