Reka Art Space (Oct-Nov)
“SCRIPTED BODIES“ A group exhibition of art-works exploring identity by 7 artists
Who are we? How do we speak, interact and behave differently with different people? How do these expectations and interactions shift with the spaces that we occupy? Where do these ideas come from? Who instructs us and why do we comply? Who owns our bodies?
These were some of the questions explored in SCRIPTED BODIES, a collaborative project between Reka Art Space and KRYSS (Knowledge and Rights with Young People through Safer Spaces) and supported by HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad and the United Nations Population Fund.
This exhibition concludes a workshop that encourages younger artists to explore the idea of body as text, especially in relation to notions of identity, gender and sexuality through their art. Angela Kuga Thas, Ezrena Marwan, Lim Paik Yin, Lor Yew Mien, Marvin Chan, Nazim Esa, Ong Ju Lin & Yati Kaprawi met over 6 weekends in September and October to discuss ideas and critique each other’s work resulting in each of the artists tackling the issues from different angles.
Reka Art Space has consistently been creating situations and spaces that encourage cross-disciplinary exchange, issue-based work and critical dialogue amongst art practitioners.
KRYSS on the other hand, aims to work with young people on issues that they deem to be urgent through creative expressions and a rights-based approach.
“We want to contribute towards building a cultural environment that is critical. On our part, we do this by creating structures and spaces that are safe for exploration and frank discussions”, says Reka Art Space gallery manager, Chang Yoong Chia.
“Workshops encourage communal participation, provide a forum for the exchange of opinions and ideas and helps expand the boundaries of what it means to be a practising artist. And often, the results are unexpected and surprising.”, he further explained.
