In case you didn't know, My Fair Lady the musical was based on the novel Pgymalion by George Bernard Shaw.

Synopsis:
An all-new musical production of the bitter-sweet George Bernard Shaw play in which a common flower seller is miraculously transformed to pass herself off as upper class.

A tale about language, class, manners and matters of the heart that is as true today as it was at the beginning of the last century. And given Malaysia’s unique penchant for the use and misuse of English; the opportunities for Manglish, malapropisms and hilarious turns of phrase are fantastic.

But more importantly it makes the wonderful and very true point that if a person is good at heart, it really doesn’t matter where they were born, what their background was and how they speak. In the final analysis of love & purity of spirit remains constant and everything else is superficial and without real value.

Paul Loosley, winner of the first Cameronian award for Stage Design, has in usual fashion, taken a somewhat quirky approach to directing the play. Being a great lover of the story as it relates to his own very working class English background he knew this was a play for today even though he’s remained fairly faithful to the original play, which Saw first wrote in 1916.

But in this interpretation the tale is kind of set in the present, and kind of set in Malaysia but aspects of the words and lyrics and culture and set and wardrobe remain kind of British and even kind of Edwardian. The idea being that this particular staging exists in its own unique, eclectic, kind of hybrid world. And so makes its own unique statement by being relevant to both the story, which is about human values not time and place, and to Malaysia, which also boasts a totally unique, eclectic and a hybrid culture.

As you will see, with a cast of 14 and an orchestra of 7, this will be the biggest production and the first all-original musical show so far staged at the new Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac).

But ultimately it is a performance that will really entertain and really touch people so that they can come away feeling they have spent a couple of really worthwhile hours. And with luck, they have searched and discovered, as Shaw says, some small hidden truth.
