Instant Cafe and Masakini Theatre presents Happy Days

The Instant Cafe Theatre Company and Masakini Theatre Company
presents in Samuel Beckett's
Happy Days
laughing wild amid severest woe
with Jo Kukathas and Terence Swampillai and directed by Chris Jacobs

"Another heavenly day" proclaims Winnie at the beginning of Happy Days, with what Samuel Beckett once described as a "kind of profound frivolity."

Described alternately as Beckett's most cheerful work and his "song of rue," the absurdist drama Happy Days is full of warm and tender humour and explores Beckett's obsession with language, existence, memory, theatricality, and communication.

A middle-aged woman, the incurable optimist Winnie, finds herself increasingly buried in a mound of earth. Winnie's husband, Willie, appears only occasionally from his tunnel behind the mound. She follows the routine of the day - praying, brushing her teeth, reminiscing about the past and endlessly trying to recall "unforgettable lines" that she has once read. Her monologue lasts until she can no longer busy herself with the contents of her enormous handbag.
