To kick off the month, there will be a chamber concert in the MPO Showcase Series themed ‘MPO Violin Recital’ on Tuesday, 2 May 06 at 6.00 p.m. The ensemble will present Bach’s Chaconne from Partita No.2 in D minor, Mozart’s Rondo in C, Kreisler’s Recitative & Scherzo, Chausson’s Poeme (Op.25), Brahms’ Scherzo in C minor and Enescu’s Lauratul din Suita Impresii din Copilarie (Op.28).

Next, the MPO will collaborate with British conductor, Paul Mann to perform Bach’s Ricecare from The Musical Offering, Stravinsky’s Concerto in D, Haydn’s Symphony No.101 in D ‘The Clock’ and Mozart’s popular Piano Concerto No.24 in C minor. This work will feature pianist Abdel Rahman El Bacha.

These concerts are under the Age of Elegance Series and are scheduled on Saturday, 6 May 06 at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 7 May 06 at 3.00 p.m.

This will be followed by two nights of musical extravaganza with Amjad Ali Khan, master of the sarod, on Monday, 8 May 06 and Tuesday, 9 May 06 at 8.30 p.m. He has established himself as the most prominent master of the sarod in the international circuit. These concerts are under the Jazz & World Music Series.

The MPO and conductor Paul Mann return to present works from the Romantic era like Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, Shostakovich’s Symphony No.11 in G minor (Op.103) and Ravel’s Piano Concerto in D for Left Hand, which will feature pianist Jean-Philippe Collard. These mesmerising performances are scheduled on Saturday, 13 May 06 at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 14 May 06 at 3.00 p.m.


A chamber concert by the MPO ensemble presenting contemporary works will be showcased on Saturday, 20 May 06 at 8.30 p.m. To be conducted by the MPO Associated Conductor, Kevin Field, this concert will present Daugherty’s ‘Oh! Lois’ from Metropolis Symphony, Gruber’s Frankenstein and a new work by local composer, Chong Kee Yong.

There will be a Musical Jamboree organised by the MPO’s Education & Outreach Programme (Encounter) on Sunday, 21 May 06 at 11.30 a.m. This concert will showcase the talents of the Encounter’s music students.

There will be a free lunchtime organ recital with DFP Resident Organist, Dr Marc Rochester on Monday, 22 May 06 at 1.15 p.m. Themed ‘The Operatic Organ’, the recital will be a celebration of the organ’s role in opera with extracts of works from Mozart, Monteverdi, Donizetti, Puccini and Wagner.
Finally, another chamber concert will be presented on Wednesday, 24 May 06 at 6.00 p.m. The MPO ensemble will perform Gliere’s Intermezzo and Tarantella (Op.9), Faure’s Piano Quartet No.2 in G minor (Op.45) and Mozart’s Grand Sestetto Concertante after Sinfonia Concertante in E flat.

The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will entice the Malaysian audiences this month with a line-up of dazzling concerts at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP). This month will also witness the performances by world renowned Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra at DFP.

First, the MPO ensemble will present a chamber concert on Wednesday, 7 June 06 at 6.00 p.m. To be conducted by the MPO Associate Conductor, Kevin Field, the ensemble will perform contemporary works like Hindson’s Comin’ Right Atcha, Andriessen’s Hoketus, Bryars’ Sub Rosa and Daugherty’s Le Tombeau de Liberace.

The MPO Principal Conductor, Matthias Bamert will conduct the MPO in an all-Mozart programme on Saturday, 10 June 06 at 8.30 p.m., and Sunday, 11 June 06 at 3.00 p.m. The MPO will perform four of the composer’s notable works: Cassation No.1 in G, Horn Concerto No.4 in E flat (featuring the MPO horn player, Peter Davida), Six German Dances and Symphony No. 28 in C. These concerts are under The Age of Elegance Series.

An organ recital will follow on Monday, 12 June 06 at 6.00 p.m. whereby DFP Resident Organist, Dr Marc Rochester and the MPO strings ensemble will enthrall audience with works such as Bach’s Trio Sonata in D minor, Krebs’ Fantasia in F minor, Stanley’s Concerto in B flat for Organ and Strings No.3 (Op.10), Albinoni’s Adagio, Kreisler’s Concerto ‘in the manner of Vivaldi’ and Mozart’s Epistle Sonatas.

On Saturday, 17 June 06 at 11.30 a.m., there will be a Music Appreciation Session with an illustrated chamber performance by presenter Gergely Sugar. Entitled ‘Beethoven (the 1800s)’, members of the public can gain insights and knowledge in this session which is organised by the MPO’s Education & Outreach Programme (Encounter).
Under the International Series, DFP will present two concerts by world renowned Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra on Monday, 19 June 06 and Tuesday, 20 June 06 at 8.30 p.m. The concerts will be conducted by Vassily Sinaisky. On the first night, the Orchestra will perform, among others, Mahler’s Symphony No.1 - ‘Titan’ and Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, featuring the world famous Sarah Chang on violin. On the second night, the Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s Suite No.3 in G (Op.55) and Shostakovich’s popular Symphony No.5.

Conductor Matthias Bamert will continue to weave magic with the MPO on Friday, 23 June 06 and Saturday, 24 June 06 at 8.30 p.m., and Sunday, 25 June 06 at 3.00 p.m. The MPO will present symphonic works like Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kije Suite (Op.60) and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.2 in C minor – ‘Little Russian’ (Op.17). The MPO will also collaborate with Sabah-born pianist Bobby Chen to perform Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (Op.43).

The MPO ensemble returns to present a chamber concert on Tuesday, 27 June 06 at 6.00 p.m. The ensemble will perform Rossini’s Duet in D for Cello and Double Bass, Schumann’s Sonata for Violin and Piano No.1 in A minor (Op.105), Schubert’s String Trio in B and Ravel’s La Valse.
