Dewan Philharmonic October/November

The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will continue to dazzle the Malaysian audiences this month at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP). First, the MPO will collaborate with renowned pianist Ivo Pogorelich to perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.3 in C (Op.26) on Saturday, 1 October 05 at 8.30 p.m. Under the baton of conductor Kazuyoshi Akiyama, the MPO will also perform Toyama’s Rhapsody for Orchestra and Nielsen’s Symphony No.5 (Op.50).

Next, there will be a chamber concert on Sunday, 2 October 05 at 3.00 p.m. The MPO ensemble will present Bach’s Sonata for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord (BWV. 1029), Prokofiev’s Five Melodies for Violin and Piano (Op.35b) and Francaix’s Wind Quintet.

Pianist Ivo Pogorelich will mesmerise audiences in a recital on Monday, 3 October 05 at 8.30 p.m. Under the International Series, the renowned artist will perform Beethoven’s Sonata No.24 in F sharp (Op.78), Rachmaninov’s Sonata No.2 in B flat (Op.36), Scriabin’s Sonata No.4 in F sharp (Op.30), and Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes No.5 ‘Feux follets’, No.8 ‘Wilde Jagd’ and No.10 ‘Appassionata’.

Note: DFP and the MPO will take a break for the month of Ramadhan and will resume performing in November 05.

The Empire Brass Quintet returns to the DFP stage in a special one-night only performance on Monday, 7 November 05 at 8.30 p.m. Prior to this, the group has made its debut performance at DFP in the 99/00 season. Under the International Series, this time around, the group will present, among others, Telemann’s Concerto in G, Pachelbel’s Fantasia in G minor, Handel’s Sonate de Camera and Purcell’s Festive Music.

The MPO will weave magic under the baton of its Resident Conductor, Datuk Ooi Chean See, on Friday, 11 November 05 and Saturday, 12 November 05 at 8.30 p.m., and Sunday, 13 November 05 at 3.00 p.m. Featuring Güher and Süher Pekinel on piano, the MPO will perform Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos in D minor. The MPO will also present Bizet’s Selections from L’Arlesienne and Franck’s Symphony in D minor (Op.48).

There will be a contemporary chamber concert to be led by the MPO’s Associate Conductor, Kevin Field on Wednesday, 16 November 05 at 6.00 p.m. The MPO ensemble will perform Anderson’s Alhambra Fantasy, the world premiere of Wong’s Snapshots and Nyman’s And Do They Do.

The MPO will continue to entice audiences on Saturday, 19 November 05 at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 20 November 05 at 3.00 p.m. Under the Age of Elegance series, the MPO will present Kraus’ Symphonie Funebre in C minor and Haydn’s Symphony No.88 in G ‘Letter V’. The MPO will collaborate with guest pianist Vladimir Feltsman to perform Bach’s Piano Concerto No.1 in D minor. These performances will be conducted by Claus Peter Flor.

There will be another chamber concert with the MPO players on Tuesday, 22 November 05 at 6.00 p.m. The ensemble will perform Vivaldi's Trio Sonata for Recorder, Bassoon and Continuo in A minor, Grieg’s Sonata for Violin and Piano No.3 in C minor (Op.45) and Beethoven’s String Quartet No.3 in C (Op.59) ‘Hero’.

The final set of the MPO’s concert this month is scheduled on Saturday, 26 November 05 at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 27 November 05 at 3.00 p.m. Under the baton of Claus Peter Flor, the MPO will perform Weber’s Overture to Der Freischütz, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6 in B minor (Op.74) ‘Pathetique’, and Matthus’ Timpani Concerto ‘Der Wald’ – ‘The Forrest’ featuring the MPO’s timpani player Paul Philbert.
