If Broadway ever erects a monument to the patron saint of laughter,
Neil Simon would have to be it.

TIME Magazine The original version of The Odd Couple premiered at the Plymouth Theatre, New York City, in 1965. It was a howling success! Audiences couldn’t get enough of it, but this did not satisfy Simon’s need to perfect it; “I rewrote it five times out of town. I think I needed one more town”. In 1968 Hollywood
got into the act and came out with the Oscar nominated film version starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon. The play also spawned two runaway success television series; The Odd Couple in 1970, and The Odd Couple: One More Time in 1993. Then, in 1998, Hollywood couldn’t help itself and came out with The Odd Couple II. As hilarious, and successful, as the original play proved to be, Neil Simon wasn’t content, so in 1985 The Odd Couple (Female Version) premiered at the Broadhurst Theatre; it proved to be even funnier than the original version.

The story line remained the same: Florence unexpectedly breaks up with her husband. Despondent, she determines to kill herself but is saved by her friend Olive. With nowhere else to go, Florence is urged by Olive to move in with her, at least for a while. The only problem is that Florence is anally retentive, neat, tidy and neurotic, whereas Olive is slovenly, casual and an absolute slob. In adapting this script from the play that made his career, Neil Simon investigates the conditions of friendship minus testosterone. The end result is this rare, side-splitting version of two completely opposite characters trying to share the same apartment.
