The Danny Crowe Show

Judging from the preview, this adaptation of David Farr’s dark comedy about family, hidden agendas and the shallow life in the world of fame and television is gonna be an interesting Indie production.

In London, there is a very special TV show. A revolution in trash TV on a whole new level. A show that celebrates the tragic, the freakish and the downtrodden. And those who make it to the show can become celebrities and be remembered as the sweethearts of TV stardom. That show is The Danny Crowe Show.

In small town Bury, strange things are happening, the kind of strange things that Danny Crowe loves. A boy and his sister live in the shadow of their monstrous, dead obsessed father. Magda, one of Danny’s scouts, is out to save them. Miles, another scout, is out to save his job, and possibly his love life. But what secrets are Peter and Tiffany hiding behind the locked doors of their family home? How far will they go for TV stardom? And what happens when their father finds out?
Director Alex Chua says, ‘This is a play about being stuck and yearning for fame and adoration – a thing every young person goes through. I’ve always wondered, if you wanted it so badly, to be famous, to be well‐known and loved by many, how far would people go to get it? The Danny Crowe Show drew me with its sharp wit, delicious irony and unforgettable story.

Have you ever wanted fame and fortune? Farr’s writing is going to make you think twice about how you get it, and why you want it.’

This is Alex’s third stage production by The Electric Minds Project. It stars Adeline Ong, Erin Marie, Khaz Shamia, Malik Taufiq, Nick Davis and Rosheen Fatima.

Frigglive spoke with the talented cast, and among the things they shared were how they had been practicing earnestly for three months and how each one of them dealt differently with getting comfortable in the skin of their respective characters, with some digging deep into their own life experiences to shape their stage persona yet all still working as a team focused on putting on a good show.

KLPac Receives RM3 Million Donation From Sime Darby

Happy smiles: Musa (left) handing over the mock cheque to KLPac cofounders Dato Faridah Merican and Joe (right).

Yayasan Sime Darby has made the single largest cash contribution to sustain a performing arts centre in Malaysian history.

A cheque for RM3mil was presented to the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) at the centre in Sentul Park, in response to a widely publicized SOS funding plea by KLPac late last year.

“The foundation has sent a strong message that not only is the arts worth supporting, but it is worth supporting in a big way,” said KLPac co-founder Joe Hasham.

Foundation chairman Tun Musa Hitam, who presented the cheque said the foundation was aware of the difficulties KLPac was facing. Revenue from ticket sales of staging world-class performances by home grown talents is just not enough,” he said.
The funds would be used to replace costly technical equipment, such as lighting and sound consoles within KLPac, as well as the maintenance and upkeep of the facility, IT management and utilities.

To date, Yayasan Sime Darby has spent RM630,000 in support of arts and culture projects for the year 2013, and the foundation said it has commitment close to RM5.2mil for causes under its arts and culture pillar.

Musa also announced that the foundation would also be sponsoring the Yayasan Sime Darby Arts festival, a national-level arts festival slated to take place in KLPac next year.

“In the midst of everything going on politically or economically, there is nothing like the arts to keep the spirits up,” said Musa during the press conference, which also saw a showcase of musical, dance and theatrical performances by groups associated with KLPac.

KLPac gets RM3 mil boost

KUALA LUMPUR (June 14, 2013): The performing arts scene in the country has been given a tremendous boost with a RM3 million funding from the Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) for the Kuala Lumpur performing Arts Centre (KLPac).
KLPac founders, theatre thespians Datuk Faridah Merican and her husband Joe Hasham, had last year appealed for funds to be able to continue running the art centre. There was fear among the arts community that the venue, officially opened May 2005, might face shut down.
Now the fear can be put to rest.
“We are relieved that our appeals have been answered by YSD, and people can rest assured that KLPac will continue,” said Faridah.
“This contribution is the single largest cash contribution to sustain an arts centre in Malaysian history, and this augurs well for the rest of the industry as
YSD has set a precedent and sent a strong message that not only is the art worth supporting, but worth supporting in a major way.
“We hope other corporations and foundations will follow suit as there are many in need of such assistance.”
The sponsorship of RM3 million is for the span of over three years from 2013 until 2016. A major chunk of the funds will go towards the replacement of costly technical equipment such as lightings and sound consoles which have outlived their usual five-year lifespan. The rest will go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the 70,000-square-foot facility, IT management and utilities.
Joe Hasham said the running cost for a venue like KLPac is about RM3.5 million a year and that YSD's contribution of RM1 million a year will help a lot in reducing their burden.
Yayasan Sime Darby was established in 1982 and is the primary driver of the Sime Darby Berhad's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
In his speech after presenting a cheque to KLPac this morning, YSD’s chairman Tun Musa Hitam applauded the efforts undertaken by the centre to ensure that performing arts would continue to be enjoyed by people from all segments of society.

Eurasians showcase their rich heritage at fiesta

A carnival air prevailed at the Eurasian Fiesta 2013 with good food, music and culture.

A crowd of several thousand feasted on mouth-watering Eurasian delicacies like devil curry, beef stew, mulligatawny, salted fish pineapple curry and more, whilst engaging in friendly chatter.

The event attracted a host of Eurasian bands and individual acts from Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca and Perak, with the crowd being serenaded with evergreen numbers throughout Saturday night at the St Xavier’s Branch school in PulauTikus.

The event was among the highlights of the month-long George Town Festival 2013.

Also featured was a Blue Ribbon Eurasian Fiesta 2013 where 10 participants tried to impress the judges with their time-honoured family recipes.

There was also an enlightening photography exhibition documenting the community’s past, as well as the sale of various handicraft items.

Fiesta organiser James Rozells said that the event, themed “Journey of Discovery”, was aimed at honouring the Eurasian community’s rich heritage and the role they played in helping shape Penang’s history.

The Eurasians are descendants of marriages between locals and the Portuguese, English and Dutch who colonised Malaya at different points in history, as well as the Spanish, French, Germans and other Europeans who settled here.

“The event creates, stimulates and raises historical awareness. We’re excited and proud to be able to share our unique and distinct heritage with everyone,” said Rozells.

With busloads of Eurasians from other parts of the country making the journey to the fiesta, Rozells said he hoped to make the event the premier Eurasian celebration in the country
