To kick off the year 2006, the MPO will present three concerts themed ‘A Latin- American and Viennese New Year’. They are scheduled on Friday, 6 January 06 and Saturday, 7 January 06 at 8.30 p.m., and Sunday, 8 January 06 at 3.00 p.m. To be conducted by Maximiano Valdés, these concerts will offer a Latin twist with works by Pablo Moncayo, Ginastera, Guarnieri, Marquez and Chapi Y Lorente. To complete the concerts, there will be a selection of favourite Viennese waltzes and polkas.
Next, the International Series will present a two-night performance by Moscow Soloists. Featuring violist Yuri Bashmet, the concerts will be on Monday, 9 January 06 and Tuesday, 10 January 06 at 8.30 p.m.
The first night will be themed ‘Music from 20th Century’ and will present Britten’s The Two Portraits for Strings, Stravinsky’s Apollon Musagete for Strings, Hindemith’s Trauermusik for Viola and Strings and Schoenberg’s Verklarte Nacht. The second night will be themed ‘Traditional’ and will present Beethoven-Mahler Quartetto serioso in F minor (Op.95), Monologue for Viola and Strings, Britten’s Lachrymae (Op.48a) and Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence.
The MPO will continue to weave magic under the baton of Maximiano Valdés on Friday, 13 January 06 and Saturday, 14 January 06 at 8.30 p.m., and Sunday, 15 January 06 at 3.00 p.m. Presenting an all-Paris programme, the MPO will collaborate with harpist Sebastian Horrer to perform Debussy’s Images and Danse sacree et danse profane. Also, the MPO will present Stravinsky’s Petrouchka, a colorful and dramatic ballet.
There will be a free lunchtime organ recital by DFP Resident Organist, Dr Marc Rochester on Saturday, 14 January 06 at 1.00 p.m. Themed ‘The Cool Organ’, he will mesmerise audiences with soothing organ music from Switzerland, France, Finland, Norway and Canada. No tickets are required for this half-an-hour concert
There will be a Music Appreciation session with Dr Marc Rochester on Sunday, 15 January 06 at 11.30 a.m. Dr Rochester will introduce to music enthusiasts great composers from the Baroque era in this informal and highly entertaining session. This event is organised by the MPO’s Education & Outreach Programme ( Encounter).
Next, there will be a chamber concert on Tuesday, 17 January 06 at 6.00 p.m. The MPO ensemble will perform Poulenc’s Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano, Part’s Fratres, and Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio.
The MPO will entice audiences on Saturday, 21 January 06 at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 22 January 06 at 3.00 p.m. Under the baton of Datuk Ooi Chean See, the MPO will present Brahms’ Variations on a theme by Haydn (Op.56a) and Beethoven’s popular Symphony No.6 in F –‘Pastoral’ (Op.68). The MPO will collaborate with violin virtuoso Akiko Suwanai to perform Dvorak’s Violin Concerto in A minor (Op.53).
Finally, there will be another chamber concert with the MPO players on Thursday, 26 January 06 at 6.00 p.m. Under the guidance of the MPO Associate Conductor, Kevin Field, the ensemble will perform contemporary works like Sheng’s Postcards, Gubaidulina’s Concordanza and Part’s Tabula Rasa, featuring violinists Peter Danis and Miroslav Danis.
