Boats & Bridges (Reka Art Space)
POETIC ENCOUNTERS OF AN ARTIST’S HOMECOMING Petaling Jayaa solo exhibition by Sharon Chin Balik kampung is surely one of our more familiar, endearing and commonly shared Malaysian experiences. Its performance, from the weekend trip to one that traverses larger geographical distances, a firm nod to the places that have contributed to the construction of our identities. Beyond its familiar comforts and joys, the journey home for some, can also carry with it a certain amount of apprehension. Changed destinies, growth, maturity, differences and new realisations set the tone for a complex re-negotiation with the ties that bind us to our histories. Sharon Chin returned to Kuala Lumpur in 2004 after her studies at the Victorian College of Art in Melbourne, majoring in sculpture. This is her first body of work made at home. This exhibition of installations and drawings are about transitions and journeys from one place to another. “For me, I experienced coming ‘home’ in two intense ways—one was with the immediacy of my body, the other was with the enveloping volume of language”, explained Chin as an introduction to her work. The 2 installations in the exhibition, one titled “Bridges” and the other, “Boats”, work in tandem to recreate Chin’s multiple sensations arising from her homecoming experiences. “Bridges” is made out of barricade tape wrapped around an immobile pillar in the gallery on one side connecting to plaster sculptures laid on the floor on the other. The imagery is gleaned from the local industrial landscape; concrete pylons, construction sites, half-filled plastic bags. This piece corresponds to the physical sensation of heaviness Chin encountered upon her return, having to renew her reponsibilities towards family, society and nation. While “Bridges” deals with the idea of weight, “Boats” is about impermanence. The installation is a giant crossword-puzzle drawn on the gallery floor using plaster as chalk. Chin encourages audiences to “navigate” the puzzle, searching out words and meanings for themselves as they walk on the puzzle. Over time, the words are rubbed out from the walking, suggesting the transient nature of words and meanings. “Language is a beautifully intangible thing... In this work, I wanted to make language visible, let it inhabit volume and space. To think more about the words that surround and define us—names of places, patriotic slogans, propaganda”, said Chin. 147 Tahun Merdeka (Reka Art Space)
ARTIST AND ACTIVIST SHOOT PHOTOGRAPHS OF MALAYSIA IN 2104 Petaling Jaya: An exhibition featuring digital artworks by Nadiah Bamadhaj and Tian Chua“147 Tahun Merdeka” is an attempt by artist Nadiah Bamadhaj and labour rights activist Tian Chua, to look at Malaysia’s segregationist architecture and infrastructure, and imagine a future of their own a hundred years from now, by digitally manipulating photographs of some of Malaysia’s iconic buildings and monuments. This collaborative effort will feature 9 large format digital prints. The Istana Budaya, Angkasapuri and the ubiquitous commemorative arch are just some of the sites featured in the photographs. Also making an appearance is the Tugu Negara. A static and imposing reminder of the chosen version of history that it represents, the national monument shows victorious British soldiers trampling over fallen communist guerillas. In Bamadhaj’s and Chua’s version, the trampled figures are re-presented as nationalists who failed to seize rightful independence from the British Empire. In these prints, Bamadhaj and Chua try to highlight the danger of prescribing a dominant ideology to what it means to be Malaysian, suggesting that in doing so could deter the nation’s growth and foster a myopic and shallow sense of national identity. “As soon as a building goes up it is history. It will represent you well past your death. If it represents you in a way you don’t want to be represented, your thoughts, feelings and concerns die with you, and what stands in your place is the brick and mortar propaganda of what you are”, explains Bamadhaj and Chua of their work in a joint statement. These prints are not merely fanciful toyings; they offer a critique of the present and a glimmer of hope of what our future may be. Nadiah Bamadhaj is trained in sculpture and sociology at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. She has worked in non-government organizations of HIV AIDS prevention and human rights advocacy and is the author of Aski-write, co-written with her late brother. She has exhibited in various countries and was awarded the Nippon Foundation’s Asian Public Intellectual Fellowship in 2002. Chua Tian Chiang, better known among the public and his cohorts as Tian Chua, has been an idealistic activist since his youth. HBailing from Melaka, he studied agriculture in Sydney before switching to philosophy. He then completed his Masters degree in Employment and Labour Studies from Holland. He was formerly active in NGO groups locally and in Hong Kong. Most notably he has been with Suaram and the Labour Resource Centre. As an activist, he has suffered police beatings and spent time unter the Internal Security Act (ISA) in the Kamunting Detention Centre. He is presently the Information Chief of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). “147 Tahun Merdeka” was first exhibited at Cemeti Art House in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2004. This is the first time these works are seen in Malaysia.Duration: 1 -24 SeptemberLocation:

Blown by the wind between two cultures.
A 30 minute contemporary dance solo performed by Singaporean, Amsterdam based dancer Ming Wei Poon. This piece was created in 2001 during Emperor Akihito’s visit to the Netherlands which caused resistance among the Dutch-Indonesian citizens ending up in fierce demonstrations. It was originally the result of a collaboration between Japanese dancer Shintaro O-Ue and Dutch-Indonesian choreographer Gerard Mosterd attempting to break the historical tension between the Dutch and the Japanese caused by the war. This autobiographical dance research alternates between Asian and Western images and movements.

A 60 minute choreography for 5 dancers and a video beamer. Recently premiered in the Netherlands, this new choreography deals with double moral in the Indonesian community. It currently tours The Netherlands. It is a personal comment on a recent Indonesian law proposal to severely punish public exhibition of interhuman affection such as kissing. The performance contains the unique projection of translated ancient Javanese sensual Kakawin poems reminding us to a time when public moral concerning affection seemed to be more relaxed.
Dutch press about “Kamu/Jij” (2005): “Best of both worlds”, Haagsche Courant, “Intriguing dance piece”, Leeuwarder Courant, “Kamu/Jij by Gerard Mosterd is accurate and full of subtleties”, Utrechts Nieuwsblad, “Glorious dance performance”, Eindhovens Dagblad.
Workshop - Dutch-Indonesian contemporary choreography: merging elements from two worlds.

The focus in the second half of the workshop will be on creation, playing with introvert and extravert motion and mounting these into a choreography.
All members of the dance company will be involved.Venue: Pentas 2, The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac)

PETRONAS ART COLLECTION: SERIES 3
NARRATIVE STRAINS
GALERI PETRONAS is pleased to present the third series of displays from the PETRONAS Art Collection
(PAC) titled "PETRONAS Art Collection Series 3 : Narrative Strains" .The exhibition which will be held
from 18 August 2005 until1 January 2006 features 34 artists through 90 artworks.
"Narrative Strains" is an attempt to decipher the multi-layered and multi-functional messages contained in theartworks. The layers are known as "texts" and together make up a textual narrative of what the author wants tosay through his/her manner of "telling". The importance of the "reader" adds to the many ways of the readingof the picture. The reader is the interpreter and how she interprets may add to the discussion of the work inquestion.
The exhibition is an acknowledgement of the need to continually discuss our visual arts heritage within acritical framework. As their counterparts elsewhere have done for centuries, Malaysian artists have used canvasto record past, existing and disappearing lifestyles, customs, traditions, identity and heritage.
The exhibits include simple drawings and paintings such as those by artist Tan Wei Khen which captures details of adornment accompanying the costumes worn by people of the different trib~s of his native Sarawak;Lucy Liew's and Awang Damit's narrations of rural life, such as farming community, in their abstract works;the batik paintings of Ismail Mat Husin which present the idealic lifestyle in a more romanticised manner; andIsmail Latirs paintings which are full of tales and legends. Visuals are also narrated in an entertaining way asLat did in his comic narration of the travelling Chinese opera performing at yet another small town stage
"Narrative Strains" is in itself a narrative of Malaysian concerns. Whether the narrative is real or imagined;provoked or imposed; political or social, they interwined to document the spirit and attributes of a nation andits people.

If Broadway ever erects a monument to the patron saint of laughter,
Neil Simon would have to be it.
TIME Magazine The original version of The Odd Couple premiered at the Plymouth Theatre, New York City, in 1965. It was a howling success! Audiences couldn’t get enough of it, but this did not satisfy Simon’s need to perfect it; “I rewrote it five times out of town. I think I needed one more town”. In 1968 Hollywood got into the act and came out with the Oscar nominated film version starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon. The play also spawned two runaway success television series; The Odd Couple in 1970, and The Odd Couple: One More Time in 1993. Then, in 1998, Hollywood couldn’t help itself and came out with The Odd Couple II. As hilarious, and successful, as the original play proved to be, Neil Simon wasn’t content, so in 1985 The Odd Couple (Female Version) premiered at the Broadhurst Theatre; it proved to be even funnier than the original version.
The story line remained the same: Florence unexpectedly breaks up with her husband. Despondent, she determines to kill herself but is saved by her friend Olive. With nowhere else to go, Florence is urged by Olive to move in with her, at least for a while. The only problem is that Florence is anally retentive, neat, tidy and neurotic, whereas Olive is slovenly, casual and an absolute slob. In adapting this script from the play that made his career, Neil Simon investigates the conditions of friendship minus testosterone. The end result is this rare, side-splitting version of two completely opposite characters trying to share the same apartment.

Exhibition 2: BLINK – In concuction with the Kuala Lumpur International Photography Bienale
Sharon Lam, Rizal Zainudin (Malaysia ), Morten Krogvold (Norway ), Paul Gad ( England )
Morten Krogvold from Norway is one of the 12 chosen top international photographers by Hasselblad, is now top of his international career.
Krogvold's works blends distance with intimacy, minimalism with maximum impact. The portraits of people in his black & white images appear amid landscapes or alone against a neutral backdrop with their faces functioning as landscapes. But they never stray from the core of Morten Krogvold's characteristic signature: His sense of form. His creativity, involvement and professionalism show in his images thoroughly his warmth and respect for his subject of people regardless of their place in society. He often creates a closeness to the people he portrayed in his images.
In his career, he has traveled extensively and among some of his experiences he also had indifference in Bosina. He found a gipsy woman on the street with a 13 hour old baby. She had been expelled from the delivery room after a Caesarean operation because she had no health insurance. No photo taken was taken. It was one of the occasions on which he failed to find the distance necessary to create a buffer of indifference, or its twin: cynicism.
Sharom Lam's images document the interaction of a space that explores the sensory experience within urban environment, using a medium format camera. To examine the architectural and interior design as well as the more personal aesthetic choices we make in our daily lives. To re-examine how these common spaces reflect our desires and the ability to function as feeling, thinking individual? With the examination of sites that are design for human action, sites that offer the potential for contemplation in the area of our perception to the space.Through the use of straight documentary image making techniques, to explore the ritual of living, my images are emptied of human presence, with the chief aim to invite audience to pay close attention to the processes under consideration and to become aware of that often involuntary attention. By casting an analytical gaze on spaces and the functions of humans within the space, I hope to explore and conserve what is general and unique in the human experience. Reality or fantasy, it is our current reflection of the world. Its not about the generic nature of our contemporary world, but about its becoming and its potential.
Paul Gadd sees colours and wants tocapture them like painting rather than photographs. His photographs are mainly abstracts; the images represent real or imagined objects by focusing on the shapes and patterns, lines and colours rather in the structure or form they exist in. He is drawn to natural elements as subject matter - on their own or their effect on man made objects.
