Sutra Dance Theatre Presents
UNDER THE STARS 2005 A SEASON OF ODISSI
Artistic Director: Ramli Ibrahim
Producer: Uma Pushpanathan
Coordinator: Shangita Namasivayam
Sutra Dance Theatre presents its Under the Stars 2005 with an Odissi Festival. Recognised as one of the prime-movers of the performing arts in Malaysia, Sutra Dance Theatre has also been accredited for implanting Odissi in the Malaysian soil.
One of the rare institutions which represents Odissi dancers mainly from the late Deba Prasad parampara, this Odissi Festival will primarily concentrate on this specialised area – performances reflecting the works and continuity of this particular tradition of Odissi. For this Odissi Festival, Sutra Dance Theatre will showcase performances by India based dancers Jyoti Shrivastava, Rahul Acharya, Orissan sisters Leena & Leesa Mohanty, January Low and the Malaysia based Sutra dancers together with Ramli Ibrahim. All of these dancers represent the most vibrant practitioners of the late Deba Prasad parampara of Odissi.
Odissi traces its origins to the ritual dances performed in the temples of the ancient Eastern part of India, namely Kalinga. This fact is immortalised in the numerous temple sculptures of this region. Today the name Odissi refers to the dance style of the state of Orissa. Like other classical arts of India, this ancient dance style had suffered a decline as temples and artists lost indigenous patronage as the Indian subcontinent is colonised, and by the turn of the previous century, there were very few surviving practitioners of the art left.
The current form of Odissi is the product of a mid 20th century revivalist movement and reconstruction. Dedicated dance gurus, scholars and dance enthusiasts draw inspiration from existing dance traditions (gotipuas and maharis), indigenous manuscripts and studied the sculpture, painting and poetry of the region. It is a miracle that in such a short period of just about forty years, Odissi has become one of the most popular Indian classical dance styles performed in the major dance centres of the world.
Under The Stars 2005 - Odissi Festival opens with dancer Jyoti Shrivastava, who cultivated a life long devotion to Classical Indian Dance since her first performance at the very early age of four. She has studied under some of the most revered Gurus including Valmiki Banerjee, Durga Charan Ranbir and Srinath Raut. She also studied Mohiniattam, Manipuri and various folk dance forms. However, of all these pursuits, her heart is captivated by the Odissi dance form. Jyoti has received various fellowships titles and awards for her expertise in this field. The title Srinagar Mani was conferred on her by Sur Singar Samsad of Bombay. She has worked for two years with Odissi exponent Ramli Ibrahim in Malaysia, and during this period, she assisted in the productions of Sutra Dance Theatre. Jyoti has also conducted an in depth research and training on the style and compositions of Guru Deb Prasad Das in her capacity as the Director of the Nehru Institute of Odissi Research and Training in Delhi. She has organised international seminars and training programs for aspiring dancers.
These five productions offer audiences a wide repertoire of Odissi, based on the thrust of Deba Prasad’s style, epochal works especially from Durga Charan Ranbir. The artists involved, who are skilled Odissi exponents in their own right, will showcase works which challenge their artistic limits, not just from the physical point of view, but also the emotional and spiritual.
