Dewan Philharmonic 2005/06 Season

The Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS’ (DFP) 05/06 season will kick off this September 05, setting a dazzling scene for music enthusiasts. The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) has lined up enchanting concerts that will undeniably enthrall audiences at DFP this month.

First, the MPO will weave magic under the baton of its Principal Conductor, Matthias Bamert, on Saturday, 3 September at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 4 September at 3.00 p.m. Featuring its very own clarinetist, Philip Arkinstall, the MPO will perform music of the Age of Elegance like Haydn’s Symphony No.55 in E flat ‘The Schoolmaster’, Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A (K.622) and Beethoven’s Symphony No.5 in C minor (Op.67).

Resident Organist Dr Marc Rochester returns to the DFP stage to perform some organ works with the MPO Brass Ensemble on Monday, 5 September at 6.00 p.m. Themed ‘Organ & Friends’, they will perform Charpentier’s Prelude to Te Deum, Campra’s Four Dances, Saint-Saëns’ Andante for Horn and Organ, Poulenc’s Suite Francaise, Francaix’s Marche Triomphale, Bovet’s Sarasota, Litaize’s Cortege and Duprés Poeme Heroique (Op.33).

The MPO will continue to dazzle the audiences with three concerts scheduled on Friday, 9 September and Saturday, 10 September at 8.30 p.m., and Sunday, 11 September at 3.00 p.m. Under the baton of the MPO’s Principal Conductor, Matthias Bamert, the MPO will perform Mahler’s Symphony No.5 in C sharp minor. The MPO will collaborate with violin virtuoso, Marie-Elisabeth Lott to perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor (Op.26).

Under Jazz & World Music Series, guitarist Paco Peña will give a memorable evening of passion and romance on Monday, 12 September and Tuesday, 13 September at 8.30 p.m. As guitarist, composer and artistic mentor, he has transformed perceptions of an archetypal Spanish art form, the flamenco.

Under the MPO Showcase Series, the MPO Brass Ensemble will perform a chamber concert on Wednesday, 14 September at 6.00 p.m. Themed ‘Turn of the Century Brass Band Concert in the Park’, this concert will feature the brass virtuosi of the MPO and some well-known works.

Renowned conductor, Carl Davis, returns to the DFP stage to conduct the MPO in a set of concerts themed ‘One AM and Safety Last’. The world of film music comes to life when the MPO presents a double bill of classic films featuring Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd on Friday, 23 September and Saturday, 24 September at 8.30 p.m., and Sunday, 25 September at 3.00 p.m.

Dr Marc Rochester will present a free lunchtime organ recital on Monday, 26 September at 1.15 p.m., presenting some jazz-inspired organ music by such composers like Shearing, Swayne, Berveiller and Gershwin.

Finally, the MPO will collaborate with renowned pianist Ivo Pogorelich to perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.3 in C (Op.26) on Friday, 30 September and Saturday, 1 October at 8.30 p.m. Under the baton of conductor Kazuyoshi Akiyama, the MPO will also perform Toyama’s Rhapsody for Orchestra and Nielsen’s Symphony No.5 (Op.50).
