"Have clothes, will travel"

by Abdul Ketot

I was watching The Terminator (yes, the Ah-nold vehicle) on cable the other day and something struck me as decidedly odd. Apparently, in that movie, when people time travel back in time, they are usually transported naked. I find it hard to believe that people in the future, who are capable of time-travelling, cannot keep their travelers decent and modest. Imagine the difficulty and awkwardness that the traveler would experience once he reaches his destination/time – he has to first find some clothes before executing his mission. This absence of proper clothes dilemma applies to both man and machine when they travel. Even after two sequels, Terminators still cannot travel decently. Yet, as machines, they have evolved into sophisticated robots, but still sans clothes when they are sent back in time.

I began to watch a few other movies with a time-traveling theme. So far, travelers in The Time Machine, Bill & Ted, Back to the Future (all 3 of ‘em) Austin Powers and Star Trek all manage to arrive fully clothed. So, really, there is no excuse for characters in the Terminator movies to arrive buck-naked and demand clothes and vehicles from present-time citizens.

Why should I find this naked time traveling disturbing? Well, if other movies can properly clothe their characters during travel, I fail to see why Terminator cannot do the same. Imagine how the lack of clothes can affect the entire story line.

Think about it. In Star Trek : First Contact, the Enterprise travels back in time to stop the Borgs from rewriting history. Imagine this : The Enterprise crew arrives naked on Earth and they scurry to find clothes. In their midst of finding clothes (because there are over 1000 crew members on board the Enterprise), the Vulcans land on Earth for the first time. Disgusted by the naked humans, the Vulcans snub them and fly to another planet. Humans never learn space travel technology and remain convinced that they are alone in the universe. Worse yet, the Borgs invade. End of story.

Still think I have nothing better to do than writing inane pieces about time traveling and nudity? Let me put it in another way - ever had one of those dreams where you have to be somewhere to do something important but find yourself naked? The first thing you do is to find clothes but you never seem to able to because there are always simple obstacles along the way, like avoiding from being seen. You fail in completing your task or can’t seem to get to your final destination. Which is why time traveling would so much the better and convenient if everyone arrives fully clothed.

Sutra Dance Theatre Presents

UNDER THE STARS 2005 A SEASON OF ODISSI

Artistic Director: Ramli Ibrahim
Producer: Uma Pushpanathan
Coordinator: Shangita Namasivayam

Sutra Dance Theatre presents its Under the Stars 2005 with an Odissi Festival. Recognised as one of the prime-movers of the performing arts in Malaysia, Sutra Dance Theatre has also been accredited for implanting Odissi in the Malaysian soil.

One of the rare institutions which represents Odissi dancers mainly from the late Deba Prasad parampara, this Odissi Festival will primarily concentrate on this specialised area – performances reflecting the works and continuity of this particular tradition of Odissi. For this Odissi Festival, Sutra Dance Theatre will showcase performances by India based dancers Jyoti Shrivastava, Rahul Acharya, Orissan sisters Leena & Leesa Mohanty, January Low and the Malaysia based Sutra dancers together with Ramli Ibrahim. All of these dancers represent the most vibrant practitioners of the late Deba Prasad parampara of Odissi.

Odissi traces its origins to the ritual dances performed in the temples of the ancient Eastern part of India, namely Kalinga. This fact is immortalised in the numerous temple sculptures of this region. Today the name Odissi refers to the dance style of the state of Orissa. Like other classical arts of India, this ancient dance style had suffered a decline as temples and artists lost indigenous patronage as the Indian subcontinent is colonised, and by the turn of the previous century, there were very few surviving practitioners of the art left.

The current form of Odissi is the product of a mid 20th century revivalist movement and reconstruction. Dedicated dance gurus, scholars and dance enthusiasts draw inspiration from existing dance traditions (gotipuas and maharis), indigenous manuscripts and studied the sculpture, painting and poetry of the region. It is a miracle that in such a short period of just about forty years, Odissi has become one of the most popular Indian classical dance styles performed in the major dance centres of the world.

Under The Stars 2005 - Odissi Festival opens with dancer Jyoti Shrivastava, who cultivated a life long devotion to Classical Indian Dance since her first performance at the very early age of four. She has studied under some of the most revered Gurus including Valmiki Banerjee, Durga Charan Ranbir and Srinath Raut. She also studied Mohiniattam, Manipuri and various folk dance forms. However, of all these pursuits, her heart is captivated by the Odissi dance form. Jyoti has received various fellowships titles and awards for her expertise in this field. The title Srinagar Mani was conferred on her by Sur Singar Samsad of Bombay. She has worked for two years with Odissi exponent Ramli Ibrahim in Malaysia, and during this period, she assisted in the productions of Sutra Dance Theatre. Jyoti has also conducted an in depth research and training on the style and compositions of Guru Deb Prasad Das in her capacity as the Director of the Nehru Institute of Odissi Research and Training in Delhi. She has organised international seminars and training programs for aspiring dancers.
These five productions offer audiences a wide repertoire of Odissi, based on the thrust of Deba Prasad’s style, epochal works especially from Durga Charan Ranbir. The artists involved, who are skilled Odissi exponents in their own right, will showcase works which challenge their artistic limits, not just from the physical point of view, but also the emotional and spiritual.

The Kuala Lumpur Performing Art Centre Presents

Play Time
Director: Loh Kok Man

“Play Time”, a new play by renowned local performing artist Loh Kok Man, will be staged in the newly constructed KLPac (The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre) from 11th to 14th August 2005. Presented by KLPac, “Play Time” is the debut performance of “Pentas Project”.

Established by Loh Kok Man in 2005, “Pentas Project” hopes to build a mature, contemporary and multi-facet stage. It is a theatre stage that enthusiasts interactions and openness. “Pentas Project” hopes to respect and appreciate differences between diverse cultures and art fields, through collaboration, interaction, sharing and learning, hence open up new horizons and collaborative spaces in theatre arts.

“Play Time” unites some of the most talented artists in performing arts. Among them are excellent performers like Gan Hui Yee, Ling Tang and Sui Shiang Chi, stage and set design by the emerging and most anticipated Chan Kok Hooi, image design by Charlie Jong and music design by the artistic director of Hands Percussion, Bernard Goh.

Inspired by “Les Chaises”, a script written by the master of Absurd Theatre, Eugene Ionesco, Kok Man extends his interest in exploring the issue of language and theatre language in “Play Time”. Through games, Kok Man hopes to reveal questions such as identity, time, ambiguities between facts and illusion and the absurdity of our society. While audiences will be enjoying a feast of visual and sound, “Play Time” would hopefully also be a thought provoking piece.

Well-intentioned, kindhearted but awkward Tora-san makes one of his periodic visit to his sister and her family in Tokyo.

His nephew, Mitsuo, is depressed because he failed his university entrance exam. So Sakura, Tora-san’s sister, asks him to talk to the young man. Willingly, Tora-san agrees, and takes him to a nearby restaurant to eat and drink.

There, he learns that one of the reasons Mitsuo is dejected is that he is in love with a young girl who transferred to a school in Saga, Kyushu, and therefore he cannot concentrate on his studies.

When the two return home that evening quite drunk, Mitsuo’s family is angry, and after having words with his brother-in-law, Hiroshi, the angry Tora-san leaves the house.

Mitsuo continues to pine for Izumi, the girl in Saga, and after a quarrel with his parents, leaves home to try to find her. After obtaining her address from her mother, the owner of a bar, he sets out for Kyushu on his motorbike.

Izumi, living with relatives, is happy to see him, and arranges economical lodging for him. To the surprise of both himself and his uncle, he is to share a room with Tora-san.

After contacting his parents, Tora-san lets himself be persuaded to visit Izumi’s home. Everything goes well until her bad-tempered uncle returns. A strict disciplinarian, he disapproves of his niece riding around with a young man from Tokyo.

Mitsuo makes up his mind to return to Tokyo, even though his uncle is spending the night at a hot spring with Izumi’s grandfather. After making his proper thanks to Izumi’s family and Izumi herself at school, Tora-san once again sets off on yet another journey.

The New Year’s holiday arrives, and Mitsuo is still glum about Izumi - only to find that she has come from Saga to visit her father: and him.

Title: Tora-san to the Rescue
Date: 20 August, Saturday
Time: 4:30pm
Venue: Malaysia Tourism Centre (MTC)

Color / Vista / 1995 / 110 min. / Shochiku

Director: Yamada Yoji

Maeda Gin, Shimojo Masaki, Misaki Chieko, Natsuki Mari, Tanaka Kunie, Dazai Hisao,
Sato Gajiro

As he usually does, Kuruma Torajiro continues to wander around the country selling knick-knacks at fairs as his family in Tokyo’s Shibamata worries about his whereabouts. Months have passed with no word from Tora when Sakura, his sister, just happens to watch a TV program on the recovery after the earthquake in Kobe. To her shock, there on screen is Tora leading volunteer activities and standing next to none other than Prime Minister Murayama. Soon thereafter a resident of Nagata Ward in Kobe comes calling on the Kuruma house to convey his thanks for all Tora’s help and to tell Sakura that Tora has once more set out on the road due to yet another failed love affair.

In the meantime, Sakura’s son Mitsuo has his own problems. Izumi, the girl whom he’s secretly loved for years comes visiting Tokyo to tell him that she might get married. Her confession seems to be a test of Mitsuo’s feelings, but in true Tora fashion, all he can do is congratulate her. Hurt, Izumi returns to Nagoya to get ready for the wedding, which will take place in Tsuyama, Okayama prefecture. But, on the day of the very fancy wedding, the boy who determined to blocs Izumi’s car to the ceremony is none other than Mitsuo. The wedding is ruined and Mitsuo is run out of town.

He wanders down south as far as he can go until he arrives on the semi-tropical island of Amami Oshima. Penniless, he is saved by a beautiful bar madam named Lily who takes him back to her beach side home. There he finds none other than Uncle Tora, who is a long time friend of Lily’s. After Mitsuo explains his predicament, Tora scolds him for not giving up in a more gentlemanly fashion, Lily urges him to tell Izumi what he really feels. He soon gets that chance when Izumi, who cancelled the marriage and went out in search for Mitsuo, turns up on the island. When she asks why he did such a thing, he finally blurts out, “Because I love you!”

With the young lovers united, what will happen to Tora and Lily? Tora has secretly loved Lily for ages, but never can seem to tell her his feelings. The two visit Shibamata to the thrill of all who think Tora finally may get married, but soon get into a fight that prompts Lily to decide to leave. When Sakura offers to take her to the station, Tora steps in and says he will do it himself. Asked by Lily in the cab how far he will take her, Tora insists, “I always take a woman to her doorstep”.

On New Year’s Day, however, a card from Lily arrives at Sakura’s house. It seems that after staying together for a few months, Tora and Lily again parted after a fight. Back in Kobe, Tora shows up once more to give his greetings to everyone he helped.

Athol Fugard's The Road to Mecca

A collaboration between KLPac and the Sunway University College School of Performance + Media, The Road to Mecca centres on the reclusive Miss Helen, who has become depressed and and appears increasingly unable to care for herself. Pastor Marius Byleveld, who embodies the village’s conservative values, is determined to get Miss Helen into an old-age home. Her friend, Elsa, a young teacher from Cape Town who is deeply suspicious of the patriarchal tradition Byleveld represents, is just as determined that Miss Helen remain free. Their battle of wills brings to light and fundamental conflicts between old young, rural, and urban, Afrikaner and English, religious and secular, male and female. In the end Miss Helen must assert her own self, claim her own life.
