Malaysian Girls – The Review

The musicomedy kicks off with Tabitha Kong as Serenity Billion, who co-founded the Malaysian Girls beauty pageant with the just deceased Samsara Jaya, mourning his untimely death just weeks to showtime and pondering the future direction for both herself and the pageant.

Cue in sinister music and in struts THR deejay Aanantha as Dato’ Ray Sanjay, Samsara’s cashy, dashy and flashy brother, with his PA Siti Farrah Abdullah as the overly ambitious and not too scrupulous Jasmine Hibiscus, and her two hatchet men Freddy Tan as Gucci Lim and Alvin Looi as the token gay male, Bata Tan.

Ray, although being clueless in the pageant business, is determined to turn the 1Malaysia pageant into a bigger, bolder idea of international beauty while Serenity wants to keep it respectable, dignified and uniquely Malaysian. In comes the Minah Salleh Zoe Taylor as shrilly voiced and highly opinionated Sydney Belle, Miss Australia 1999, and therein starts a classic love-hate relationship where Ray and Serenity clash.

Clash entertainingly it does, powered by the writing of Mark Beau de Silva, and embellished by top 40’s music as well as 14 original compositions by singer-songwriters Khairil M. Bahar, Ariff Akhir, Ian Chow, Wani Ardy and Min’z. These specially-commissioned songs were played live by a six-piece band partly hidden on stage.

So what can you expect from the show? *Warning* plot spoilers ahead!

First, the cons: As a reviewer who is unabashedly biased towards all things Malaysian, this is the toughest part.

As the female lead, Tabitha Kong’s petite size did at times do her injustice in taking attention away from her performance.

Aanantha’s role consisted mostly of macho posturing and “jantan” poses, not all that different from his role in an earlier play Taming of the Shrew – A Bollywood Cabaret.

Too many solos and duets among the main cast at the expense of the rest of the characters.

For a show that runs for 2 hours, the plot and characters are not well fleshed out. An example of this is the romantic interest between Serenity Billion and Ray Sanjay and the lukewarm ending to the vicious clash between both sides with Serenity simply declaring she is a Malaysian and the rest of the cast tamely following suit without resistance.

The lyrics also could have been better developed but I’m willing to discount this as you will probably be too distracted by all the female flesh strutting up and down the stage.

More “Aria” moments are desperately needed to keep the show from getting draggy and stretched.

The choreography lacked the explosive energy and variety required to wow the audience.

Most of the cast were pretty average on the dancing scale. The better dance moves were actually delivered by the Minah Salleh.

The stairs smack middle on the stage were one of the more interesting features of the set but perhaps they also served as a weakness. Each time the girls danced up and down the stairs on their six-inch heels I said a silent prayer that none of them would fall.

Now that the bitching’s over, let’s get on to the pros:

Sydney Belle’s Aria – totally unexpected but a very appreciated and pleasant surprise.

The cleverly split costume change for the entire cast in the Hindi number “Jai Ho”, which also served to bridge the intermission.

Vapid answers to contest questions and a hilarious traditional costume segment.

Lots of sashaying, costume changes and pleasant melodies.

Siti Farrah as Jasmine, is perhaps the best actor of the production pulling off rude, aggressive, cunning and wicked not only effortlessly but flawlessly. It’s a crime she wasn't given more solos.

Miss Brickfields probably had the best lines amongst all the finalists, and delivered them superbly.

Anrie Too as usual delivered impressive acting and showcased her vocals well.

There were nuggets of meaningful messages throughout the show, especially about inner beauty making Malaysian girls quintessentially Malaysian.

The jokes, the biting sarcasm and the message of the musicomedy make the show worth watching. Add the songs, over-the-top dramas and glamorous costumes, and Malaysian Girls will definitely satisfy your craving for year end candy.

The best one-liner was delivered as Gucci Lim walked in unannounced on Jasmin.
I didn’t know you could say “pantat” on stage!

Klue, Doh! – The Review

Question: What do you get when you brew a potent mix of 1 murder, 2 perspectives, 2 cops, 3 murder weapons and 6 dysfunctionally wacky suspects?

Answer: You get a hair raising runaway train wreck called Klue, Doh! where the audience is thoroughly perplexed while being entertained. There’s hope for Malaysian theatre yet.

Klue,Doh! is a collaboration, between theatre makers from Australia and Malaysia. The project is aimed at exploring the art of voyeurism within the confinement of the domestic space, where the audience are taken out of their comfort zone and shoved into a rollercoaster ride that baffles at every turn! Beware – there are no brakes on this ride!

Shades of Agatha Christie's "The Mousetrap" surface like a submarine as you watch, helplessly and hopelessly drawn into the manically witty drama unfolding right before your very eyes not once but twice. Like any good mystery worth its salt, Klue,Doh! is as much about who actually did it, as it is about the madcap unravelling of events that gets you there.

Your first clue that you’re in for a rather entertaining evening is when you’re stamped with either a “suspect” or “witness” rubberstamp on your arm. Is it a murder mystery? Yes it is. Is it a comedy? Yes it is. Is it a tragedy? Yes, that too.

Viewers are split into two groups and ushered into two separate auditoriums that offer views of different rooms in the same house - the inner study which is the scene of the crime, and the main living room.

Basically you are fed part of the information watching round one of the play, and then get to piece it together when you switch to the other room. It is a simple but brilliant strategy, that forces a certain amount of improv from the actors to keep the rapidly unravelling runaway proceedings on both sides in perfect sync. It also requires the audience to pay careful attention to detail if they are to solve the murder at the end.

The suspects were well albeit stereotypically cast, with Anne James as the vengefully bitter ex-wife, stage veteran JD Menon as the naughty but lovable ruffian filmmaker brother-in-law, Terence Conrad as the nerdy and idealistic son, Davina Goh as the streetwise urchin desperate to climb the social ladder even if it means sleeping her way to the top, Jon Chew as the extremely gay wedding planner, Nabihan Yaacob as the initially obedient but increasingly sinister maid, and Iqmal Shafiq and Ley Shahrwind as the bumbling senior and eager beaver junior officer police officers.

Without giving too much away as the play is still ongoing, toilet hygiene entrepreneur and loan shark Datuk Jackson Mo is found murdered and every member of his household has a motive to kill him. Add in some creative licensing in the naming of the characters – for example the Datuk’s Chinese name is Mo Les Ting, his fiancee the ex-GRO from Jinjang is Charity Ho Mun Mun while the Indonesian maid is a mouthful at Gangbang Sukajolo Suprianto. Then there’s the rapidfire play between “Hammer” and “Paku”.

Although the play plunged straight into business without much character development, the cast and crew deserve kudos just for pulling it off so well. The sets, lighting and music are subtle but effective, with seemingly innocuous objects and nooks and crannies in each room and the dialogue itself turning out to be essential to the unraveling of this madcap mystery.

The stereotypical characters are in fact sly digs of Malaysiana that we will immediately recognise and identify with. The dialogue is sharp and witty, littered with clever references to current events (yes, footie included) to careful listeners.

I felt that Anne James (Datin Saras Mo the uppity ex-wife) was having rather an off day on the night that I watched the show, resorting more to physical comedy and slapstick rather than her normal acting performance.

JD Menon delivered his lines and ad libbed hilariously with superb comic timing, covering gaps in the flow with the confidence that can only come from years of perfecting his craft. Equally impressive was Nabihan Yaacob who nailed her character’s Indonesian accent and mannerisms, many times cracking us up with only her facial expressions.

Iqmal Shafiq also stood out as the non-underwear wearing ASP Hamzah, spot on with the various smug and bigoted idiosyncrasies we often associate with our men in blue.

Despite all the things it has going for it, Klue,Doh! is not without its flaws. Lack of character development aside, there were also gaping holes in the plot’s logic, as in the murderer using his own personal handphone when prepaids are so easily available. The storyline occasionally seemed stretched to fill in both rooms at the same time. Also, I found the video projections rather distracting and unnecessary.

The verdict? It's extremely entertaining and hilarious, and unless you're the type that gets offended by the F word and suggestions of a sexual nature, go watch it. It's highly recommended and well worth the price of the ticket to watch 2 plays in one.

Still cracks me up even as I write this.

Frigglive Review - Adam The Musical

The script not only expressed the trials and tribulations of an HIV-sufferer and those close to him, it also reveals the complicated and sensitive subject faced by thousands of Malaysians in multi-cultural relationships — religious conversion. Through the eyes of Elsa (Sandra Mannas Wolf) the audience is reminded about the difficulties faced by the family when a member converts.

ATM superbly depicts the scenario when life can go horribly downhill with a twist of fate. The story involves HIV-afflicted Adam (Malik Taufiq) who battles the fatal disease as he plans to marry his fiancée Sylvia (Maria Yasmin/Tabitha Kong) and deals with his Auntie Noni (Datuk Faridah Merican) gives the viewer a nasty reality check.

Although the character of Adam is selfish, his partner Sylvia is the ideal lover, as she deals with his disease while fighting her own battles of converting to Islam, her overly protective sister Elsa and the uncertainty of her future.

The songs by Lim Chuang Yik and Teng Ky-Gan are catchy, especially Jumbo-Size and We Are Alive, about the importance of using condoms and celebrating life, with the dance moves complementing the songs well.

Directed by Joe Hafsham, the musical also featured an interactive black and white film background and an eight-piece band that gave the theatre a ‘live’ feel throughout the two-hour musical.

The three characters who stole the show are two transvestites affectionately called Jambu (Mo Dee) and Mangga (Fairuz Tauhid) with their over the top attire and straight shooting social commentary. Mabel (Tria Aziz) as the wheelchair pushing mama who loves the fact that she is now dead and therefore free from pain, constantly had the audience in stitches (pun intended) .

Despite the one minor whine about ATM’s sudden ending, it achieved its objective to raise awareness of the seriousness of HIV and AIDS in a non-preachy way with entertaining songs and a simple storyline.

Adam The Musical follows up on The Actors Studio’s Life Sdn Bhd 5: I’m Positive and is now playing at The Actors Studio Lot 10 until June 20. Shows are at 8.30pm daily except Mondays and at 3pm on Sundays. Tickets start from RM30 to RM60. Call 03-21422009 for tickets and more information.

Le Tour de Langkawi 2009

Asia's biggest cycling event, Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) is back this year as a new-look race, inspiring change and a better future under the guidance of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

This 14th edition brings with it a new meaning to the word perseverance as the sport of cycling continues to move forward despite current economic uncertainties on a global scale. Graded again as a hors class (2.HC) race by the International Cycling Union (UCI), LTdL 2009 maintains its status as one of the most prestigious races in Asia, projecting the vibrant, dynamic, colourful and peaceful nature of host country Malaysia.
Measures to make the race more compact, in dealing with difficult times has not meant a decline in interest in the race as some 17 world class teams representing each continent will be pitting their strength against three Malaysian teams that are fired up for the challenge set forth right from the start of the race on February 9 to its end on February 15.

The changing and evolving face of LTdL today is represented not only by its route and a number of new, hopeful teams, but also in the presence of a growing number of new sponsors wanting to associate themselves with this prestigious event.

This time around, national car manufacturer Proton together with Telekom Malaysia Berhad’s sponsorship of the most coveted jersey, the yellow jersey for the overall leader of the general classification, won last year by Moldova's Ruslan Ivanov of the Serramenti Diquigiovanni-Androni Gioccatoli team, comes alongside the company's return yet again as official car supplier.
Fortified drink Milo will again supply the leader's jersey for the point’s classification which is set to see fierce battle between the top sprinters in the pack. While Genting Berhad, synonymous with LTdL most dreaded deciding stage, the climb up Genting Highlands, will again provide the polka dot jersey for the leader of the mountains classification.

The leader of the Asian riders' classification this time around, will project the name of one of the latest additions to the LTdL family, German car maker Volkswagen, who make their debut as an event partner for the blue jersey worn by the leader of this classification.

LTdL 2009 will cover a total distance of 1,036.3km beginning with Stage One from Putrajaya to Senawang on Feb 9, Senawang to Melaka the following, a loop from Melaka to Melaka after that; before leaving Melaka to Bandar Baru Bangi for Stage Four, before coming to the decider from Petaling Jaya to Genting Highlands (Stage Five). Stage Six on the penultimate day on February 14 is from Batang Kali to Shah Alam and the curtains comes down with the traditional Kuala Lumpur Criterium on February 15.

The Tour is organized by the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) with the support of the Malaysian Government via the Ministry of Youth and Sports and sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC).

The BMW Art Car World Tour kicks off in Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia is the first stop for the international museum exhibiton about “rolling sculptures”.

The BMW Group started the world tour of its unique and rare BMW Art Car Collection in the Malaysian capital today. BMW cars designed by artists Frank Stella (1976), Roy Lichtenstein (1977), Andy Warhol (1979), and Ken Done (1989) are being presented at Galeri Petronas in KLCC from September 15 until October 22, 2006.

BMW Group, Director of Corporate Communications, Mr. Richard Gaul said, “The BMW Art Cars represent BMW’s commitment within the arts and are one of hundreds of cultural engagements that the BMW Group is involved in worldwide. The BMW Group sees the development and realization of cultural projects in cooperation with private and public institutions as a pioneering way of promoting networks within the cultural landscape.”

Gaul added that the BMW Art Car World Tour will take the ‘rolling sculptures’ to Singapore, Philippines, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India, Taiwan, China, Russia, Turkey, the United States of America and Europe.

The initial idea for the collection, which was to have an automobile redesigned by an artist, was introduced by Hervé Poulain, an auctioneer and ardent racing driver from France. It was upon his initiative that his American friend, an artist by the name of Alexander Calder, transformed his BMW racing Car - a BMW 3.0 CSL - in 1975. The first vehicle to establish a symbiosis between the world of art and the world of motor sport later participated in the 24-hour race at Le Mans.

Prompted by enormous enthusiasm for this work of art on wheels, BMW then established the Art Car Collection. In the initial years only racing cars that had taken part in the renowned 24-hour race at Le Mans were worked on. Later, production cars were added to the spectrum. The final work of the series to date was completed by the American concept artist Jenny Holzer, who covered the surface of a BMW V12 Le Mans racing car with her word art known as "truisms".

The 15 exhibits which have thus far been presented in the BMW Art Car Collection include works by well-known artists such as Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, A.R. Penck, David Hockney and Jenny Holzer.

The Art Cars reflect the developments in art history with regard to fine art, design and technology and are displayed worldwide in major museums such as the Paris Louvre, the Royal Academy in London, the New York Whitney Museum of Modern Art, Venice’s Palazzo Grassi, Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum and the Guggenheim Museums of New York and Bilbao. In the future, too, Art Cars will document the fascinating link between art and technology in international exhibitions.

Director of Galeri Petronas, Tengku Nasariah Tg Ibrahim, said the gallery felt privileged to be chosen as the venue for the BMW Art Car World Tour debut. “As the first in the region to present the BMW Art Cars, Galeri Petronas is honoured to join the ranks of other prominent art galleries and museums in the world. In their way, BMW's efforts and involvement in cultivating the appreciation for art among the public is indeed commendable. This is very much in line with PETRONAS' objective for establishing Galeri Petronas which is to inspire Malaysians and promote holistic development.

The annual Japanese Film Festival is back again!

At the Japanese Film Festival 2006, 9 films will be screened at 2 venues in Klang Valley. This year, we have a special guest from Japan, Mr. SHINOHARA Tetsuo, the film director of “Inochi” and “Heaven’s Bookstore”. He will give a speech at the opening ceremony on 5th September, and his special talk will be held at ASWARA (Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan, formerly known as ASK, Akademi Seni Kebangsaan) on 6th September.

These are a wide range of films from human drama to comedy, suspense to romance, and all of them were produced between 2002 and 2004. So, it’s a rare opportunity for Malaysians to catch all those new Japanese films at one time! UCHIDA Kenji’s “A Stranger of Mine” was awarded 4 awards at the Cannes International Critics' Week (part of the Cannes International Film Festival). And good news to Ultraman fans! “ULTRAMAN: The Next” will be screened as well.

Also, we’ll have lucky draw for the audience. The 20 lucky audiences can obtain a gift certificate for a body treatment at Embun Day Spa in Mon’t Kiara.

The Magic Shoes Charity Performance

A charity show of ‘The Magic Shoes’ will take place in Dewan Auditorium MPPJ on September 2, 2006, performed by the dance troupe Dance Space. You are cordially invited to this charity event. By attending you can both support the performing artists and dancers, as well as make a contribution to society of your own.

‘The Magic Shoes’ is a dance performance about the magical journey of a little girl who loves dancing more than her life. It begins when she unintentionally obtains the story book ‘The Magic Shoes’. Later she meets an angel in a dream and is given a pair of magical dance shoes. With the magic shoes she enters the world of the story, meeting different creatures in different places. She dances with little animals in the deep forest, with swan sisters alongside the swan lake, and even with robots and machines. The play joins together various styles of dance in a work of great imagination. It is the most essential work that Dance Space has yet conceived, a charity performance you and your children will regret missing.

Apart from selling tickets, the performance also welcomes donations from any good hearted person or group. All income, after deducting necessary costs, will be dedicated to three charity institutions — Good Samaritan Home (Klang), Caring Old Folk’s Home (Kajang), Rumah Love & Care (Kajang).

‘The Magic Shoes’ will be performed by both teachers and students of Dance Space. The troupe, led by the dean Ms. Jane Lew, is also assisted by several local and overseas dancers. Asian dance artist Vincent Tan, founder of Batu Dance Theater, takes the position of Artistic Advisor for this performance; internationally renowned dancer Mr. Lee Swee Keong, Malaysia’s Hip Hop King Mr. Joel Tan, Teresa Chian and other famous dancers are in charge of the choreography.

With this performance, the members of Dance Space dedicate their artistic learning to the inspiration of charitable works. With genuine hearts and bright smiles the children of the group will give you the best dancing performance, and a joyful and meaningful night.

Come and watch some of the most creative videos from the UK this October!

With ever-more mainstream music channels on digital TV, and endless new pop tarts only too willing to shake their thing at any fish-eye lens who’ll watch, it’s time somebody reminded the public that music videos can be more than just fuel for the egos of stars with already worryingly large heads.

British Council is presenting Antenna UK, a showcase event of creative and lesser seen videos focusing on material from British music video directors. The videos featured will not be the kind you see on commercial MTV, but made with a diverse range of media on much smaller budgets. From clever camera tricks and hi-tech computer graphics to lo-tech animation and illustration, huge creativity rather than huge budgets will be the defining link. It will also feature interviews with the directors talking about their work and background.

Antenna UK will premiere to the Malaysian public on 6 October, 10pm at The Loft, Zouk KL, brought to you by British Council in association with Zouk Club KL. This event is free but club rules apply. Second Link is a provocative, insightful literary texts and humorous performance celebrating the work of Singaporean and Malaysian writers; with diverse topics ranging from the Merlion and Singlish, through nationality, race and sexuality. Directed by Ivan Heng and featuring a stunningly accomplished company of 10 actors from the two countries, Second Link will surprise, delight and reveal the obsessions and concerns of the cities' denizens and artists.

The production makes a return to Kuala Lumpur after two years, where it was first performed as Riding The Nice Bus at Zouk KL and directed by the late theatre legend Krishen Jit for the Kuala Lumpur Literary Festival 2006.

Since then, the show has been presented alongside Tikam-Tikam: Malaysian Roulette, directed by Singapore’s Ivan Heng and has made pit stops at the Hong Kong City Festival 2006 and the Singapore Theatre Festival 2006. This physical theatre performance of more than 50 texts from an eclectic selection of drama, poetry, novels and interviews, playfully introduces the audience to the joys, relevance and meaning of literature and found texts in the context of the two countries.

Through voice, movement, sets, costumes and lighting, 10 actors from both sides of Causeway come together to wring vivid meanings from the texts, opening new ways of appreciating literature – moving the private and personal experience of reading a book to a joyfully shared, communal experience.

A keen observation of life through more than 50 writers’ eyes, what emerges is a celebration of the written word and shared history and stories of two inseparable countries was a hit with audiences and critics in Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Expect laughter and fresh points of view as the Singaporeans and Malaysians perform each other's stories, icons and idiosyncrasies, even as they playfully invite you to make up your own tale of two cities.

KLPac is proud to present ,All About Harps featuring one of the few solo harpists in the Southeast Asia region - Katryna Tan.

Katryna has performed extensively in the US, Japan, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore. Highlights of her performances include a very successful fund-raising recital in her hometown of Seremban, William Mathias' Harp Concerto with the Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra, Rodrigo’s Concierto de Arnajuez with the Singapore Armed Forces Band, solo recitals in the Penang-YTL Arts Festival 2003, a Chamber Harp Concert at the Esplanade and a lunch-time solo concert also at the Esplanade.

In 2005, Katryna premiered her composition, Water Dancem, a piece inspired by an Ancient Chinese instrument called guqin. She has also released a debut solo album, Harp On, and another album with flutist Wendy Low entitled A Little Light Music.

Besides performing, Katryna is also a keen educator. She directed and staged a concert of a 17-strong harp orchestra at the Esplanade with her students. In recognition of her talent, she was awarded the prestigious national Young Artist Award 2005 by the National Arts Council of Singapore.

The film, Sound of Music, premiered in 1965 and enjoyed record-breaking box office success, continuing to play in cinemas until December 1969. In 1966, the film received five Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Film Editing, Sound Design and Music Adaptation.

A large part of the film’s phenomenal success is due to the irresistible score by Rodgers and Hammerstein, as proven by the astounding success of the motion picture soundtrack. The original album reached Gold Record status a few months after release and remained on the best-selling charts for 233 weeks. Today it remains one of the most popular soundtracks of all time, with over 8,000,000 copies sold in North America alone.

Sing-A-Long-A Sound Of Music has played to sold-out shows across Britain, United States and Australia since it began in 1999. The show has toured more than 70 centres in the United Kingdom, playing to more than 200,000 people.

The Actors Studio presents two comedies by one of the funniest men that ever picked up a pen.

Black and Silver and Chinamen by Michael Frayn.

Michael Frayn, born in 1933 is a writer, translator and playwright who is probably best known for the long running West End and Broadway hit comedy Noises Off, which was made into a film starring Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve and Denholm Elliot. Noises Off is partly inspired by Frayn's experiences with his earlier play Chinamen; he once commented that during a performance of that play, the chaos behind the scenes was often more entertaining than the action on-stage.

Black and Silver and Chinamen

A young married couple returns for a romantic break to their honeymoon hotel in Venice Italy, only this time, bringing their newly born baby along with them. Set in the small hours of the morning, the play sees the young couple struggling to relive the romance and retain their sanity as baby gets up to all the things that babies do in the middle of night!

The second half of this double bill sees two actors playing five characters in Chinamen.

“I can’t really tell our friends apart, that’s the trouble….same age, same number of children, same income, same opinions…” Stephen and Jo have friends round to dinner but find out too late that they’ve independently invited both halves of a couple, Barney and Bee, who recently separated – and worse, Bee is bringing her new boyfriend Alex! This hilarious farce follows their increasingly frantic attempts to keep Barney from meeting Bee and Alex by running two separate dinner parties in two different rooms in the house at the same time! The quickfire plot will leave the audience amused and amazed as the actors come and go through various doors switching from one character to another in an increasingly frenzied set of quick changes.

The stark contrast between these two characters begs the question: 'What's wrong with the old ways?', and conversely, 'What's wrong with the new ways?'

Written by Lim Chuang Yik and Teng Ky-Gan, two die-hard fans of Musical Theatre who grew up with Rodgers and Hammerstein, matured with Lloyd Webber and Rice, and reached adulthood with Boubil and Schonberg. London performance poet Francesca Beard will entertain Malaysian audiences for a second time with her inimitable style of poetry, this time performing her one-woman show, “Chinese Whispers” at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre this September.

Chinese Whispers is a show about identity, set in London, at the start of the 21st century, in a city where daily, over 300 languages are spoken… arguably one of the most multicultural cities in the world. It asks the questions: ‘Who am I?,’ ‘Where are you from?,’ ‘Why are we here?,’ ‘What makes us laugh?,’ and ‘Which would you rather be, Hamlet or Buffy the Vampire Slayer?’

Troubadours / Open Doors is a monthly series of live performances and short-film screenings jointly organised by Troubadours Enterprise and KLPac. The series feature talented musicians who write, perform and / or present original material. The sixth installment will feature an eclectic line-up which includes veteran independent musician Peter Hassan Brown, street musician Sherry and Panda Head Curry. The next installment of Troubadours / Open Doors will take place in December 2006.

Peter Brown
Peter is a solo acoustic artist who has been writing songs since the 1970s. After relocating to Malaysia in 1984, he started his own company Lemang Music and formed Passion with Markiza. They subsequently released two albums "Open Secret" (1993) and "Love & Music" (1996). His critically acclaimed fourth solo album "Warm" was released in 2001. Since then, Peter and Markiza have formed a five-piece named Soft Touch and released an album with the band.

Sherry
Sherry was one of the pioneers who started the busking scene in Kuala Lumpur. Along the way, he completed a few recording sessions as a guitarist and backup vocalist. He has performed with various bands and recently started venturing into the singer-songwriter scene. One of his songs, Sighyoung, is featured in the singer songwriter compilation released by Troubadours in 2006.

Romantiknya ISA by HAKIM
Romantiknya ISA captures the untold stories of I.S.A. detainees in Malaysia. Since 1960, more than 10 000 people were detained under the I.S.A. Act. However, not many people know the real stories behind these cases. This short-film will feature interviews with ex-detainees, lawyers, NGOs and the public. It was the winner of the Freedom Filmfest in 2005.

KLPac is proud to present Dream'n Butterfly, featuring upcoming dancer and choreographer Jack Kek in his debut solo dance performance.

The piece is inspired by Zhuang Zhi's poem which revolves around a dream he had about a butterfly. When he awakes, he becomes confused about whether he was dreaming about the butterfly or was the butterfly dreaming about him. In a way, it tries to present overlaps between reality and the unreal. The movement will be based primarily on Chinese dance but it will also incorporate some elements from subsequent developments of Chinese dance. Multimedia projections will also be used during the performance.

Jack Kek is no stranger in the local dance community. He has performed alongside veterans like Mew Chang Tsing and Lee Swee Keong in the acclaimed Rivergrass Dance Theatre's production of Lady White Snake. He recently graduated from the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts (HKAPA) with a degree in Dance, majoring in Chinese dance.

Besides Chinese dance, he also dabbles in tap dance and contemporary dance. He has performed in a wide variety of productions ranging from the West Side Story to Joget Rentak.

As part of the festival, an exhibition of wind instruments along with workshops on instrument care will be held by Yamaha Music Malaysia. A free service and consultation on wind instruments will also be provided by Yamaha. This one-act play by Noble Prize-winning Irish playwright, Samuel Beckett, premiered in 1957 at London's Royal Court Theatre. Endgame is considered by some to be amongst Beckett's most important works.

3. BONEY M. LIVE IN KL ( 1-5 September 2006)

The 1970s saw the birth of Disco - 100% freaking, boogying, hustling, bumping, bus-stopping, pure disco dancing. It started in the mid-70s and continued right through, well into the 80s. One of the biggest groups to stand out and make their mark was BONEY M. Their sound - a mix of reggae, disco, funk, soul and rock - hit the charts around the world in a flash. Within 10 Years, the group released 18 platinum and 15 gold LPs, more than 200 gold and platinum singles and about 150 million units sold all over the world. Golden Globe-winning film company leBrocquy Fraser has teamed up with Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka and the Ministry Of Culture, Arts And Heritage Malaysia to produce the theatrical comeback of local indie film director U-Wei bin HajiSaari in a never-before-told thriller about the legendary 15th-century warrior Hang Jebat and the circumstances surrounding his death.

leBrocquy Fraser were the producers of the 2003 film “Osama” which won several awards including the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film (for Afghanistan), as well as awards for director Siddiq Barmak at the Cannes Film Festival and the London Film Festival. The company is also behind U-Wei’s new short film “My Beautiful Rambutan Tree In Tanjung Rambutan”, which premiered at the Cannes Directors Fortnight last month.

leBrocquy Fraser is now staging the theatrical return of writer and director U-Wei with the Bahasa Malaysia play “Wangi Jadi Saksi”, a production in the collaboration with the Ministry Of Culture, Arts And Heritage Malaysia as well as Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year with the opening of a state-of-the-art auditorium within its office building on Jalan Dewan Bahasa in Kuala Lumpur.

“Wangi Jadi Saksi” is the story of Hang Jebat’s final moments, as told through the eyes of his young widow Dang Wangi, as she confronts those accountable for her husband’s fatality. Through flashbacks and flash-forward, Jebat’s confrontations with his comrades and nemesis are revealed as the writer and director provokes his audience by presenting a different interpretation to this historical event.

The politically charged thriller is set in 15th-century Melaka during the reign of Sultan Mansur Shah. The four Great Lords who represent the hierarchy of nobility in the Melaka Sultanate are the Bendahara, Penghulu Bendahari, Temenggung and Seri Bija Diraja. However, when the post of Laksamana is instituted, the position of Seri Bija Diraja begins to decline as the status of the new warrior rises to be on par with it.

Hang Tuah becomes the first and most famous Laksamana who serves until the reign of Sultan Mahmud Shah. The main literary sources for Tuah are “Sejarah Melayu” and “Hikayat Hang Tuah”. In these books, “Hikayat Hang Tuah” chronicles the story of Tuah from childhood to his death, while his bravery and accomplishments are detailed in “Sejarah Melayu”. His legend is highlighted by the depiction of his loyalty to the Sultan and to Melaka when he is summoned to kill his closest friend Hang Jebat.

“Wangi Jadi Saksi is one version of that event where, by trying to understand the meaning of Hang Jebat and the sensibility of Malay written and spoken texts, I’m allowing myself to conjure what may have taken place behind the closed doors of the palace during the confrontation between Jebat and Tuah,” says U-Wei.

“I found the confrontation between these characters the most interesting aspect of these two books,” adds U-Wei. “It’s mentioned only briefly, and that allows for interpretation and speculation, and writers have written countless texts with various dramatic fight sequences between Jebat and Tuah them since then.”

“Wangi Jadi Saksi” features a cast of character actors assembled after an exhaustive search for the perfect ensemble. Starring in the performance are Khir Rahman as Hang Tuah, Vanidah Imran as Dang Wangi, Sobri Anuar as Hang Jebat, Dato’ Rahim Razali as Bendahara, Khalid Salleh as Pateh Kirma Wijaya and Sabri Yunus as “Time”.

Equally impressive is the creative team that’s directed by Desmond Crowe, who was art director of filmography on such movies as “Alexander” (directed by Oliver Stone), “Hamlet” (by Kenneth Branagh) and “Othello” (by Oliver Parker). In 2002, along with art directors and production designers of the television miniseries “Band Of Brothers”, he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Art Direction.

The creative team includes Sutex Haron as costume designer, Azizul Zahid Jamal (better known as Toe Moe) as lighting designer, Y. Subowo of Indonesia as music composer, and Dwiono Hermantoro and Suhaimi Maggi (Rono) as choreographers.

“This production has all the elements that are distinct to U-Wei’s style of storytelling,” says producer Julia Fraser. “It’s a compelling combination of psychology, emotional depth, literary sources, tortured performances, strong detail and a fine sense of craft.”

“Wangi Jadi Saksi” is U-Wei’s first theatrical production since “Bakai” in 1997. He’s known most as the writer and director of such acclaimed films as “Perempuan, Isteri Dan Jalang” (which won Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Story and Best Film at the 1994 Malaysian Film Festival), “Jogho” (Best Director and Best Film at the 1999 Malaysian Film Festival) and “Kaki Bakar” (“The Arsonist”) from 1995, one of the most talked-about independent films in modern Malaysian history.

In addition, “Wangi Jadi Saksi” will launch the new RM50million auditorium at Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka, and serve as another signal in the escalating interest and support by Malaysians and international audiences towards the creative and performing arts in Malay.

“It’s a great step for Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka to support such meaningful theatre, and we could not have staged this without the enormous support of Dato’ Dr Firdaus Hj Abdullah,” says Fraser. “We are also honoured to have the Minister Of Culture, Arts And Heritage Dato’ Seri Dr Rais Yatim supporting us, and constantly nourishing and preserving Malaysian culture and literature.”

“Wangi Jadi Saksi” premieres on Thursday July 27 at the Auditorium Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka, Menara DBP, Jalan Dewan Bahasa, Kuala Lumpur, and runs until Sunday August 6. Performances are at 8:30PM from Tuesday to Sunday, with extra shows on Saturday and Sunday at 3:00PM. As a pianist and a classical singer, Cindy performed at numerous prestigious venues including The Barbican Centre, St.Paul's Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, and Winchester Cathedral and HRH Prince Charles and the President of Malta were amongst her diverse audience.
A music graduate from cambridge University, Cindy subsequently pursued a career in artistes and orchestral concert tour management in Asia Pacific, UK and Europe. Artists toured included the Vienna Boys Choir, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, and Evgeny Kissin. Cindy recently made her stage debut in M! the Opera as Madame Ling Soong in March 2006 at Istana Budaya.

With a plethora of music genres all gathered on one stage, this concert celebrates the rich and diverse rhythms of local and international music. In this the second edition of the festival, a different genre of music will be featured on each night of the festival. You'll get a magnificent mix of everything from traditional to jazz, from erhu to violin, classic to contemporary, from the Malay zapin to world music.

The first night's performance (Mon 3 July 2006) will be a showcase of "World Fusion Music", featuring exciting rhythmic sounds of The Aseana Percussion Unit, Saharadja from Indonesia, The Chung Myung Art Troop from Korea and Kulintangan Group from Sabah.

The second night, (Tue 4 July) will see Malaysian ensembles performing, with MOHRAM, WARNA, PCCO and The Temple of Fine Arts sharing the limelight and presenting a mix of ethnic classical cross-over music.

The final night (5 July) of the festival has been dedicated to Jazz, with performances by The David Gomes Jazz Sextet, Mr. Gambus Band featuring Chie Hanawa (from Japan) on the Shamisen, Idea of North from Australia and The KLMF Jazz Selection comprising of Steve Thornton, Andy Peterson, Mac Chew and Zahid Ahmad.

"Making the Invisible, Visible" - A glimpse of urban refugeesin Malaysia

The United Nations Refugee Agency and the Photographers' Gallery are proud to present a new collection of photographs entitled "Making the Invisible, Visible" - which offers a glimpse into the hidden lives of refugees in Malaysia – not in camps, but in urban settings, in low-cost houses and flats in cities like Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Baru.

It depicts images of refugees in their day to day life in Malaysia, images that remain largely invisible to the Malaysian society at large. This collection aims to evoke empathy for refugees’ fears and hopes, joys and despair, and make the invisible, visible in the hopes for a better future.

All proceeds from the sales of the photographs will go towards a project to help refugee children through art and photography, led by The Photographers' Gallery and UNHCR.

The First Venezuelan Week in Malaysia

To most Malaysians, the very mention of Venezuela conjures up images of some of the most alluring beauty queens the world has ever seen. Yet, very little is known of its rich cultural heritage or the fact that Venezuela is one of the largest oil producers in the world.

From 2nd to 9th July 2006, in conjunction with the commemoration of 195th Independence Day of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela for the first time in Malaysia, the Embassy of Venezuela will celebrate the auspicious occasion by showcasing the arts and craft of Venezuela together with an eventful calendar of activities and exhibitions. The eventual success and great interest generated by the week-long event has been made possible through the collaborative efforts between the Venezuelan Embassy staff and our main sponsors, Soka Gakkai Malaysia, Crowne Plaza Mutiara Hotel; Pampas, South American Grill & Bar; and Salsa Havana, Latin Club & Tapas Bar.

It is heartening to note the goodwill and generosity extended to Venezuela; it goes beyond the geographical and climatic similarities shared by both countries. The commitment to socio-economic exchange and political ties established between Malaysia and Venezuela has resulted in a progressively improved relationship. The very success of the inaugural launch of Venezuelan Week 2006 signifies a new level of development, encouraging proactive political, economical and cultural exchange to foster bi-lateral ties and dialogue between Venezuela and Malaysia.

Indigenous Art And Craft Exhibition

Venezuela has very strong folk cultural roots; its thirty-six ethnic groups are spread over vast zones of the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers that border neighbouring Colombia, Brazil and Guyana. The exhibition provides an excellent overview of a thriving indigenous art and craft heritage rarely encountered in this age and time. The conservation of indigenous artprovides a unique glimpse into the techniques and materials used, contributing to the worldwide effort to preserve precious Pre-Columbian art consisting mainly rock carvings and cave paintings in the form of petroglyphs. Venezuela’s colonial era is mainly characterised by religious paintings and sculptures in the Spanish style. Amongst the exhibits are significant artifacts from the andinos (hardy mountain folks); the guayanés, (tough frontiersmen following their dreams); the llanero, (cowboys of the Llanos); and the maracucho (energetic entrepreneurs of the Maracaibo area).

Internationally-Acclaimed Film Showcase

The subject matter presented by multi award-winning films covers a wide spectrum: From the historical saga of the arrival of Spanish conquerors by director, Andres Agusti (The Admiral Faces); to the melodramatic depiction of a harsh yet courageous subsistence way of life among the Andes (A House with the View of the Sea); to how a single person’s wrenched past isturned around, inspiring a community’s efforts to preserve its customs and language (One Life and Two Trails); to that of emotional upheaval when one must deal with to maintain sanity during war (Knocks At My Door); and the hostile feuds and intriguing counter-plots taking place below the world-renowned Angel Falls (Roraima). The showing of some of the most celebrated films of our times is an indication of the dynamic and robust growth of the Venezuelan film industry.

Works Of Master Photographers

A grand total of 40 images shot in the 80s by master photographers, Vladimir Marcano and Esso Alvarez will be displayed. Shot with two lowly-branded plastic cameras nicknamed, “Holga and Diana,” respectively.

The images are testimony to the poetic vision of ordinary life; a series of highly focused and visually stunning works that in the words of writer, Edmundo Brancho, “hidden potency beyond the eye of photography” and described by the artist, Ani Villanueva as “magnificent combination.” The exhibition is a timely reminder in our highly sophisticated technology-driven society: Originality, sensitivity to forms executed in the simple black and white format are hallmarks to creative par excellence.

‘Arepa’ Gastronomic Experience

Arepa is the most popular foodstuff in Venezuela. Like bread, it can either be eaten with a main meal or stuffed with meat, Bolognese, cheese or scrambled eggs as one wishes. The age-old tradition of preparing arepa from freshly husked and ground corn has been replaced by using pre-cooked white corn flour. The savouring of arepa has taken on an international appeal as it is increasingly available worldwide. For authenticity, the Embassy of Venezuela has specially flown in pre-cooked white corn flour for the food festival. An invitation to the “Arepa Festival” is not just another food-tasting experience but an attempt to get to know Venezuela as a country steeped in cultural diversity.

‘Guitarist Extraordinaire’ Appearance

Aquiles Báez is ‘guitarist extraordinaire’ of Venezuela. Especially flown in to perform for the gala event, invited guests will marvel at his artistic virtuosity with the guitar; sophisticated at times, yet harmonious and soothing to the audience. Mr Baez’s outstanding accolades include: National Artist Award of Venezuela as best arranger of the year; William Leavit Award at Berkley Music College and other numerous awards for exceptional scores for the theatre, films and dances. Mr Báez has performed extensively throughout the Latin American countries, Europe, Japan and North America.

Tokyo Notes

The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur (JFKL) and The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) are proud to present Oriza Hirata's Tokyo Notes. The piece will be directed by Hirata and performed by the Seinendan Theatre Company in Japanese with English and Malay subtitles.

Tokyo Notes led Hirata on to win the 39th Kishida Kunio Drama Award (1995), the most important and prestigious award for Japanese playwrights. Since then, it has been translated into seven languages and has been performed in nine different countries around the world.

The play centres around an assortment of people who visit a small art museum in Tokyo in 2004 to see the paintings evacuated from war-torn Europe. Focusing on their various concerns (family, job, war, art etc), this play constructs a whole world of its own, just like a picture made from mosaic tiles.

The Royal Netherlands Embassy & KLPac are proud to present one of the finest young ensembles from the Netherlands - the Matangi String Quartet.

Aptly named after an Indian goddess who seduces her listeners with a lute, the quartet comprises four young musicians - violinists Maria-Paula Majoor and Daniel Torrico Menacho, violist Karsten Kleijer and cellist Arno van der Vuurst. The "Matangis" have performed extensively at international festivals as well as with popular Dutch artists, playing both classical and jazz repertoire. The quartet has released two CDs and a smashing single, Bats from Hell, which was hailed as a “contagious bridge between classic and pop” by Classical Affairs magazine.

Glen Clarke, winner of last year's Australia's National Sculpture Prize, is currently the Asialink's Residence Artist hosted by VWFA. The artist will present a selection of his recent works at VWFA's Annex Gallery before returning to Australia for a solo exhibition at Despard Gallery, Tasmania. About the artist: Glen Clarke was born in Traralgon, Victoria, in 1954. He completed a Diploma of Art and Design at the School of Visual Arts, Monash University, in 1976 and a Master of Fine Art at the Tasmanian School of Art, Hobart, in 1991. He lectured in sculpture at the Tasmanian School of Art between 1989 and 1996,and was Associate Professor of Sculpture at the University of Hue, Vietnam,in 1998. Clarke has held ten solo exhibitions and his work has been selected for many group exhibitions, including the National Sculpture Prize and exhibition 2003, NGA, Canberra; the Second International Sculpture Symposium, Hue (1998); ARX3, Perth (1991); the Australian Sculpture Triennial, Melbourne (1981); and the Mildura Sculpture Triennial, Victoria (1975 and 1978). Clarke has received several awards and grants, including the City of Hobart Prize for Sculpture (1993) and Australia Council Development Grants in 2003 and 1997. "Another heavenly day" proclaims Winnie at the beginning of Happy Days, with what Samuel Beckett once described as a "kind of profound frivolity."

Described alternately as Beckett's most cheerful work and his "song of rue," the absurdist drama Happy Days is full of warm and tender humour and explores Beckett's obsession with language, existence, memory, theatricality, and communication.

A middle-aged woman, the incurable optimist Winnie, finds herself increasingly buried in a mound of earth. Winnie's husband, Willie, appears only occasionally from his tunnel behind the mound. She follows the routine of the day - praying, brushing her teeth, reminiscing about the past and endlessly trying to recall "unforgettable lines" that she has once read. Her monologue lasts until she can no longer busy herself with the contents of her enormous handbag.

SmoovePinch'ed: Before you read all this, we simply want to say that we experienced the hilarious taruh session at their last show. Fresh material in the Malaysian world of stand up comedy is hard to come by. If you want original stuff and not afraid to get taruh'ed then do not miss this coming treat because we are still recovering from the stomach pains from laughing so hard at the last show. Seriously. We want second helpings. Great stuff for the more mature audience.

So what is Up…. Standing …and Coming for the audience this time. That is the first question that greets the comedy duo Monti and Logi of the Bolehman Comedy Theatre. It is always interesting to know that this duo always come up with titles that are telling, derogating and full of innuendos.

Coincidently, their brainstorming and writing of women and effeminate men in the early part of the year seemed to have been picked up in Parliament. What better than to stage a current hotly debated topic in comedy theatre.

One can actually get attracted to the title simply because it tells us that it is about bolehland (the alternative name that the duo frequently used for Malaysia). It is part uplifting and in part putting down certain people, issues, places and ideas and definitely there are innuendoes to the all sensitive subjects of sex, politics and more.

For example, in their last year comedy “Ipoh Mali Kencing Tada Bunyi”, one will know that it is about how people brand others from certain towns and cities, but one will also knows that definitely something naughty is in stall for them, especially when they exposed the reason behind the massive availability of virgins in Ipoh.

Their recent show in March entitled “Taruh, Taruh, Taruh” has many meanings. “Taruh” could mean scold, attack, put down and even sexual acts. So it is no wonder that a suggestive title like Up, Standing and Coming is coming our way.

The reason behind their creative titling is because Monti has a masters in business management majoring in marketing and Logi is also a creative consultant for organizations that need ideas.

“Advertising and marketing is my favourite subject all my life” says Monti “I spent half my life trying to understand how we can tell people what is in my mind using as few words as possible”.

“ We have studied what people want and what stimulate them, and we know that dark desires, family, marriage and political issues will always troubling us” Logi added.

“Our creative process started way in December 2005 after our final show for 2005 entitled ‘Plain Old Fart’, and it is guided by our decision to do ‘attacking’ stand-up for 2006”, he continues.

Attacking Stand-up on issues affecting people is what people want and we just give it to them. Giving people what they want to see and hear do come with a price. Bolehman Comedy Theatre aspires to be the voice of the people and will endeavour to keep vigil on all happenings in this wonderful country. This can be difficult as we may tick off some issues and people who feels that we should keep mum about it.

In their recent comedy Taruh, Taruh, Taruh they were told by the law enforcement officers to avoid issues that was sensitive in March 2006. However over the years, they have learnt how to work with such legal, social and political limitations resulting in their growth in creativity; benefiting not only themselves but the arts fraternity as well.

In their 10th stand up comedy, the audience will have a chance to meet two female stand up comediennes, Devina Choi and Jill Jill Rani ,the alter ego of Monti and Logi. Both Devina and Jill Jill are golden girls in their later forties and fifties who work together as gossip and advise columnist for a local newspaper. They will share their lives with the audience.They will talk openly about anything and everything. Devina is hair-brained with occasional sparks of brilliance and independent, while Jill Jill is a menopausal, caustic spinster who is sharing Devina’s house.

They even spend sometime at some a local “hotspot” with the “Middlesex” people (people who is neither male or fully female) to research this particular subject. This is to help them find some answers as to why some men want to be women and women want to be men; and what man want in a woman and vice versa.

So what do man and woman really really want from the opposite sex? The truth is man wants a woman to behave more like a man and woman wants a man to be more like a woman; as in the song of the famous “My Fair Lady” where Professor Higgins sang – “why can’t a woman be like a man”.

Not only will they have a dig at men as women, they will also have a dig at women during the second half. It fact they will have dig at one developed state (15 years ahead of vision 2020), MPO, job seekers then and now, some unfortunate friends that knows them, relatives who wish to disown them and of course, themselves.

They will be supported by their regular live musicians, Terri and Abby of the Crossroads. You can expect some good sounds from this group.

Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) presents a set of dazzling performances by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) and guest soloists, and visiting artists in its final month of the 05/06 season.

The MPO will collaborate with Thai conductor, Bundit Ungrangsee to perform Sheng’s Fanfare & Finale from China Dreams and Schumann’s Symphony No.3 in E Flat. The MPO will perform renowned cellist Daniel Müller-Schott to present the mesmerising Cello Concerto in B minor (Op.104).

These concerts are scheduled on Saturday, 1 July 06 at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 2 July 06 at 3.00 p.m.

This will be followed by a chamber concert by the MPO ensemble on Tuesday, 4 July 06 at 6.00 p.m. The ensemble will present Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin and Mother Goose Suite, Thomas’ Merlin and Druckman’s Reflections on the Nature of Water.

Then, there will be two performances by the MPO under The Age of Elegance Series on Saturday, 8 July 06 at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 9 July 06 at 3.00 p.m. Under the baton of Claus Peter Flor, the MPO will perform Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.4 in A (Op.90) ‘Italian’. The MPO will collaborate with pianist Rudolf Buchbinder to present Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.1 in C (Op.15).

DFP’s Resident Organist, Dr Marc Rochester returns to perform on the majestic Klais Pipe Organ on Monday, 10 July 06 at 6.00 p.m. Together with the MPO chamber players, Dr Marc will present Grandjany’s Air for Harp and Organ, Rheinberger’s Suite for Violin and Organ (Op.150), Martin’s Sonata da Chiesa and Dupré’s Trio for Violin, Cello and Organ (Op.55). This concert is themed ‘Organ and Friends’.

Conductor Claus Peter Flor returns to weave magic with the MPO on Friday, 14 July 06 and Saturday, 15 July 06 at 8.30 p.m., and Sunday, 16 July 06 at 3.00 p.m. The MPO will perform the majestic Bruckner’s Symphony No.5 in B flat.

Finally, pianist Krystian Zimerman will make his debut recital at DFP under the International Series on Monday, 17 July 06 at 8.30 p.m. He will perform Mozart’s Sonata in C, Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales, Gershwin’s Three Preludes, Chopin’s Mazurkas (Op.24) and Sonata No.3 in B minor (Op.58).

Geraldine Javier: Plaster Saints

As one of the Philippines' finest young painters, Geraldine Javier was awarded the Cultural Centre of the Philippines (CCP)’s 13 Artists Award in 2003. The artist made her first appearance in Malaysia in the same year at VWFA’s group exhibition entitled Silent Declarations. Since then, she has been exhibiting her increasingly sophisticated and enigmatic works on a regional level. This June, she holds her first solo exhibition outside the Philippines at VWFA. Belonging to a new generation of Filipino artists with fresh ideas and clever, original strategies, Geraldine Javier is a master of the uncanny and the strangely disturbing. Her exquisite and masterful painting plays on the allure and beauty of a darker side of experience.

In Plaster Saints, the artist paints a series of religious icons and dolls inspired mainly by photographs and movie stills. Despite the daunting size of the gothic stone sculptures and the haunting presence of the toys, according to the artist, these objects are “symbols of innocence, purity; I chose to depict them weathered by use and time, a testament to living. I hope to reassess the value of these icons in our life – from our childhood to adulthood, sort of a companion and an embodiment of our joy, despair, hope; something that will provide comfort and assurance in our many emotional needs.”

Geraldine G Javier graduated from the University of the Philippines with a bachelor's degree in Nursing (1991) and in Fine Arts (1997). She is one of the founding members of Surrounded By Water, an alternative art space in Manila as well as a fellowship of artists, which has been active since 1999.

Exploring the human figure

Group Exhibition featuring works by Jolly Koh, Long Tien Shih, , Khalil Ibrahim,, Alex Moh, Yusof Majid, Ivan Lam, Ginny Bierberich, Bernice Chauly and Saiful Razman

This group exhibition of some of malaysia ’s most current leading names on the art scene explores the subject of the human form. Traditionally in painting the nude in western art is considered the most beautiful of all forms and the most difficult to master as a painter. Celebrated for its beauty in form in ancient greek sculpture and in renaissance painting in the human body is an important part of the history of western art. Up until recently life drawing was an absolute essential part of a portfolio upon applying for art schools in Europe. It was a must to be able to competently draw the human form before creatively distorting or moving away from it.

In this exhibition featuring works by Long Tien Shih, Jolly Koh, Khalil Ibrahim, Yusof Majid, Ivan Lam, Bernice Chauly, Ginny Bierberich and Saiful Razman, the works deal with the human form in a less conventional traditional western sense. Each artist imposing his own style of painting on the subject while keeping in mind its strong historical significance in art. For example Ivan Lam’s piece entitled ‘Naked 3’ is an abstract work which surface area is filled spontaneously with mark making splashes of paint pushed into the background by six different symbols alluding to the human form.

“Rights and Wrongs – A Fair” is a photo exhibition highlighting 100 powerful images of human rights situations in Malaysia. This collection of photographs is intended to raise awareness amongst the Malaysian public about different human rights issues, and is held as one of the build up activities within the Freedom Film Festival (FFF) 2006 organised by the Malaysian Pusat Komunikasi Masyarakat.

KOMAS is a non profit organization and social media communications center based in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. This FFF2006 is an annual event carrying themes based on the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” encompassing the ideals of justice, human dignity and peace.

The photo exhibition will be held at the ground floor of The Summit Shopping Complex in USJ. from 24-25th June, 2006, from 10am – 10pm daily.

Rivergrass Dance Theatre presents Pebbles 3, a platform for both amateur and professional dancers to share the stage and exchange their experiences in dance. The first performance, Catch That Thought, will showcase graduates from the Rivergrass Dance training course along with talented young children aged between 3 and 12 years old.

The second performance will see some of the best dancers in Malaysia performing a piece about the emotions of “Qi” (Angin or Semangat). The 6th version of this piece, Qi.VI, will see the dancers tread into newfound territory where their senses are broadened and the individuals become united.

Fundraising tickets are available to assist Malaysian representatives attend and perform at the World Dance Alliance’s Global Assembly 2006, Toronto. In fact, “Qi.VI”, will be performed there.

The very same group of individuals is also bidding for the Global Assembly 2008 to be hosted in Kuala Lumpur.

Putu Sutawijaya: Body ‘O’

The fiery, rhythmic figurative work of Balinese painter Putu Sutawijaya shows for the first time in KL at the start of May, following a residency at Gudang Art Space. Putu’s distinctive style has created a definite impression on the Indonesian and Southeast Asian art world, making him one of its fast-rising stars.

On display at this exhibition will be over fifteen large mixed media works on canvas as well as studies. The point of origin for each of them is the uncovered human body. However, Putu Sutawijaya does not seek to represent the ‘I’ of figurative portraiture. Stripping his figures and removing their identity, the artist has over the years created infinite symbolic narratives using the human body that touch on the universal and mystical. The human being is shown immersed in the struggle and the dance of life, powerfully expressed in movement and gesture.

Artist Profile:
Born in Tabanan, Bali, Putu Sutawijaya pursued his studies at the Art Faculty of the Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta and graduated in 1998. Since then he has been producing contemporary works from his studio in Yogyakarta and Bali. The artist is the recipient of the Philip Morris Top 10 Asean Artist Award (1999) and the Best Fine Art Award from the Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta at the 11th Dies Nathalis. Putu Sutawijaya works have been exhibited throughout Indonesia. His paintings have also been shown in London, Basel, Chicago, Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong.

Student of the Great Nadeem Selamat Ali Khan, son of the great Bakshi Salamat Ali Khan ( the person responsible in bringing Qawalis to the world. A style of Qawali's also made famous by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan). Haider Ali has performed in Australia and also in Pakistan, amongst great names like The Great Gulam Ali, Shaukat Hussain, Shaukat Ali, Attaullah Khan Niazi and many more. Worked on 2 albums, 1 local together with other artists, and 1 in Pakistan which was his first solo album.

2. Ravin Sikander
The elder brother to Haider Ali, has accompanied artist in Ghazals, Classical Instrumental, Jazz, Contemporary & experimental music. He has accompanied artits from Malaysia, India, Australia, Europe, and US. He has learn't under the Punjab Ghrana and also Purab Ghrana. Currently involved in the production & arrangement of albums, plays, life shows and many more.

3. Shabeer Ahmed Rana
a powerfull folk singer, a deciple of Haider Ali.

4. Gyani B.
A Music Composer, producer, DJ & VJ. Gyani comes from the western electronic music arena, and brings a very freindly aproach to the classical music taste. Currently learning Indian Percussions and fooling around with the Taanpura.

To kick off the month, there will be a chamber concert in the MPO Showcase Series themed ‘MPO Violin Recital’ on Tuesday, 2 May 06 at 6.00 p.m. The ensemble will present Bach’s Chaconne from Partita No.2 in D minor, Mozart’s Rondo in C, Kreisler’s Recitative & Scherzo, Chausson’s Poeme (Op.25), Brahms’ Scherzo in C minor and Enescu’s Lauratul din Suita Impresii din Copilarie (Op.28).

Next, the MPO will collaborate with British conductor, Paul Mann to perform Bach’s Ricecare from The Musical Offering, Stravinsky’s Concerto in D, Haydn’s Symphony No.101 in D ‘The Clock’ and Mozart’s popular Piano Concerto No.24 in C minor. This work will feature pianist Abdel Rahman El Bacha.

These concerts are under the Age of Elegance Series and are scheduled on Saturday, 6 May 06 at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 7 May 06 at 3.00 p.m.

This will be followed by two nights of musical extravaganza with Amjad Ali Khan, master of the sarod, on Monday, 8 May 06 and Tuesday, 9 May 06 at 8.30 p.m. He has established himself as the most prominent master of the sarod in the international circuit. These concerts are under the Jazz & World Music Series.

The MPO and conductor Paul Mann return to present works from the Romantic era like Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, Shostakovich’s Symphony No.11 in G minor (Op.103) and Ravel’s Piano Concerto in D for Left Hand, which will feature pianist Jean-Philippe Collard. These mesmerising performances are scheduled on Saturday, 13 May 06 at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 14 May 06 at 3.00 p.m.

A chamber concert by the MPO ensemble presenting contemporary works will be showcased on Saturday, 20 May 06 at 8.30 p.m. To be conducted by the MPO Associated Conductor, Kevin Field, this concert will present Daugherty’s ‘Oh! Lois’ from Metropolis Symphony, Gruber’s Frankenstein and a new work by local composer, Chong Kee Yong.

There will be a Musical Jamboree organised by the MPO’s Education & Outreach Programme (Encounter) on Sunday, 21 May 06 at 11.30 a.m. This concert will showcase the talents of the Encounter’s music students.

There will be a free lunchtime organ recital with DFP Resident Organist, Dr Marc Rochester on Monday, 22 May 06 at 1.15 p.m. Themed ‘The Operatic Organ’, the recital will be a celebration of the organ’s role in opera with extracts of works from Mozart, Monteverdi, Donizetti, Puccini and Wagner.
Finally, another chamber concert will be presented on Wednesday, 24 May 06 at 6.00 p.m. The MPO ensemble will perform Gliere’s Intermezzo and Tarantella (Op.9), Faure’s Piano Quartet No.2 in G minor (Op.45) and Mozart’s Grand Sestetto Concertante after Sinfonia Concertante in E flat.

The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will entice the Malaysian audiences this month with a line-up of dazzling concerts at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP). This month will also witness the performances by world renowned Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra at DFP.

First, the MPO ensemble will present a chamber concert on Wednesday, 7 June 06 at 6.00 p.m. To be conducted by the MPO Associate Conductor, Kevin Field, the ensemble will perform contemporary works like Hindson’s Comin’ Right Atcha, Andriessen’s Hoketus, Bryars’ Sub Rosa and Daugherty’s Le Tombeau de Liberace.

The MPO Principal Conductor, Matthias Bamert will conduct the MPO in an all-Mozart programme on Saturday, 10 June 06 at 8.30 p.m., and Sunday, 11 June 06 at 3.00 p.m. The MPO will perform four of the composer’s notable works: Cassation No.1 in G, Horn Concerto No.4 in E flat (featuring the MPO horn player, Peter Davida), Six German Dances and Symphony No. 28 in C. These concerts are under The Age of Elegance Series.

An organ recital will follow on Monday, 12 June 06 at 6.00 p.m. whereby DFP Resident Organist, Dr Marc Rochester and the MPO strings ensemble will enthrall audience with works such as Bach’s Trio Sonata in D minor, Krebs’ Fantasia in F minor, Stanley’s Concerto in B flat for Organ and Strings No.3 (Op.10), Albinoni’s Adagio, Kreisler’s Concerto ‘in the manner of Vivaldi’ and Mozart’s Epistle Sonatas.

On Saturday, 17 June 06 at 11.30 a.m., there will be a Music Appreciation Session with an illustrated chamber performance by presenter Gergely Sugar. Entitled ‘Beethoven (the 1800s)’, members of the public can gain insights and knowledge in this session which is organised by the MPO’s Education & Outreach Programme (Encounter).
Under the International Series, DFP will present two concerts by world renowned Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra on Monday, 19 June 06 and Tuesday, 20 June 06 at 8.30 p.m. The concerts will be conducted by Vassily Sinaisky. On the first night, the Orchestra will perform, among others, Mahler’s Symphony No.1 - ‘Titan’ and Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, featuring the world famous Sarah Chang on violin. On the second night, the Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s Suite No.3 in G (Op.55) and Shostakovich’s popular Symphony No.5.

Conductor Matthias Bamert will continue to weave magic with the MPO on Friday, 23 June 06 and Saturday, 24 June 06 at 8.30 p.m., and Sunday, 25 June 06 at 3.00 p.m. The MPO will present symphonic works like Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kije Suite (Op.60) and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.2 in C minor – ‘Little Russian’ (Op.17). The MPO will also collaborate with Sabah-born pianist Bobby Chen to perform Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (Op.43).

The MPO ensemble returns to present a chamber concert on Tuesday, 27 June 06 at 6.00 p.m. The ensemble will perform Rossini’s Duet in D for Cello and Double Bass, Schumann’s Sonata for Violin and Piano No.1 in A minor (Op.105), Schubert’s String Trio in B and Ravel’s La Valse.

The second performance, will see some of the best dancers in Malaysia performing a piece about the emotions of “Qi” (Angin or Semangat) entitled “Qi.VI”. “Qi” plays a significant role in most Asian traditions.

It’s The 4th Annual BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2005

Nominations for the 4th Annual BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2005 were announced today at the Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur, the official hotel of the awards, by a host of luminaries including past award recipients actor-singer Sean Ghazi, dancer January Low and recording artiste Shanon Shah.
Nominees were announced in multiple categories honouring excellence in dance, music and theatre during the 2005 performing arts season. An independent judging commission of 31 artistes, critics and academics appointed by the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards Committee selected the nominees in a record-breaking 38 competitive categories. The 4th Annual BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2005 is organised by Kakiseni.com and carries the name of the title sponsor BOH Cameronian. Eligible productions staged between 1st January 2005 and 31st December 2005 were considered for nominations, and the judging commission deliberated over a record total of 25 dance productions, 20 music concerts and 42 theatre plays.
The 4th Annual BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2005 has added the following categories to the nominations: Best Actor In A Supporting Role, Best Theatre Production, Best Choreographer In A Mixed Bill, Best Choreographer In A Full Length Work, Best Artistic Direction In Dance, Best Dance Production, Best Music Production and Best Inter-Disciplinary Production (Special Mention).

Actor-playwright Jit Murad and singer Izlyn Ramli return for a second year as the hosts for the ceremony, which will be held at the Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur on Friday, 5th May 2006.

“We are looking forward to a great awards show this year,” states Jenny Daneels, co-founder of Kakiseni.com. “This has been a challenging season with many diverse productions. Each year we try to keep our ceremony fresh and lively, with participation by some of the performing arts world’s biggest personalities.”

Come and join Kuala Lumpur’s own Six2Eight as they take a retrospective look back through their twelve year catalogue of kicking accapella tunes in Then2Now!

Six2Eight take songs that either have already been given the accapella treatment by other exponents of the style, or pick songs that they like and vocally rework them with their voices taking the leads, instruments and rhythms.

With choreography by Edna Tan and lighting design by Kevin Tan, expect to be well and truly entertained by perennial SIX2EIGHT favourites such as “Stand By Me”, “Stupid Cupid” and “In The Mood” and check out the vocal treatments they’ll be giving to songs like “Sway”, the Black Eyed Peas “Let’s Get It Started” and Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated.”

Launched in February, Troubadours / Open Doors is a monthly series of live performances and short-film screenings that is jointly organised by KLPac and Troubadours Enterprise. This new collaboration aims to feature talented Malaysians who write, perform and / or present 100% original material.

In the third installment of this series, Pak Pandir, champion of the Malay folk genre, will be performing alongside drums & percussions enthusiast, Tugu Drum Circle, and a 4-piece pop band, Ferns. Between the performances, there will be short-film screenings featuring the work of indie filmmakers Jeffrey Loh, Jimmy Choong, Chariwat Tan Paisarn and Nik Haslinda.

The jazz quintet, Global Spirit, embodies the point at which the music of four continents meets. These different but related styles unify to create a unique blend of American, European, African and Asian expression.

The quintet is led by British saxophonist/composer Greg Lyons whose own background in Europe and America has produced a style derived from a combination of the 1970's jazz-rock scene, contemporary bebop as well as Brazilian and Cuban music.

Add the phenomenal Finnish pianist/composer Jarmo Savolainen, whose dark modal style reflects his embrace of the most contemporary of US styles with a large dose of Scandivanian coolness.

Then consider the inclusion of Malaysian percussionist master Lewis Pragasam, a highly regarded drummer and educator whose style displays the virtuosity and discipline of the Indian classical tradition as well as the freedom of modern jazz.

British trumpeter Damon Brown bag of tricks belies knowledge of diverse styling from reggae to free-jazz. His compositions reflect a mix of hard-bop and modal.

The pulse of the band is with Californian bassist Christy Smith. His incredible diversity as a musician is utilised here within the broad stylistic compass of this ensemble. His solid underpinnings are the perfect foil for the fervent polyrhythms of Pragasam and the two provide an intense and inspiring platforms for others.

Greg's CD 'Island to Island' (featuring amongst others Greg, Lewis and Chirsty) was recently selected as the ALBUM OF THE WEEK on radioJAZZ, the top internet jazz radio station in the world based in North Carolina, USA.

Raymond Yap: Crossing Boundaries

Making his Malaysian debut at Valentine Willie Fine Art this March is London-based artist Raymond Yap (b.1966). Malaysian-born Yap first went to study art in the UK in the mid-90s, first completing BFA with honors from the Wimbledon School of Art and eventually gaining a place at the prestigious Royal Academy Schools. Since graduating, Raymond's painting has been exhibited extensively in the UK, and has gained him various awards and scholarships: the Fenton Art Trust Prize in 2000 and the Selina Cheneviere Fellowship in 2001. The artist is also the recipient of the 2006 Whisper Residency at the Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester.

On exhibit will be a new series of iconic paintings of various sizes, with the largest measuring 4 x 3 ft. Big or small, what binds these works together and charge them with a cool contemporary attitude are their clever and vibrant colour combinations and contrasts. So seductive are the colours and intricate textures of Raymond's painting that it is hard to imagine that they are produced using only ordinary glossy household paint on MDF board, manipulated by an unique process over extended periods of time. Apart from this ingenious and original technique, another surprise these works offer is the presence of passport emblems and stamps on the picture surface. While their introduction may simply allude to the artist's sense of national identity, personal travels and experience, once abstracted and merged with potent colours of the paintings, they become subtle reflections of space, time, and power, thus marking globalize society's insatiable desire to cross, rather than to control, boundaries.
